I just bought an 86 Mustang GT convertible for my wife. The wipers do not work and from what I'm reading, it looks to be the wiper control module has gone bad. These seem to be pretty hard to come by so I'm wondering if anyone has an aftermarket solution to the module? A bypass kit perhaps? What options exist aside from buying a used module (if you can find one) and hoping it works?

I am not aware of any [control module]. On an 86, I'm pretty certain that it's all in the multi-function switch.

Replace it if you're not getting voltage to the wipers with the key in the [On] position.

Check for power on the [Red] wire going into the multi-function switch. If you have power at [Red] but not between the other pins coming out of the switch and ground as you cycle the switch through its positions, then the switch is bad.

If your car has interval wipers, there is an interval governor box (black) located under the dash near the left had side of the steering column. The Ford part number for an 86 will be E4ZZ 17C476-A. The Motorcraft designation is SW-1914.

And you're right, they are hard to find. If you do find one they usually want big bucks for them. They aren't reproduced. If you have an EVTM, there is a testing procedure for the wiper switch that might give you an idea what the problems is.

Keep an eye out on Ebay. Most of the time the seller will list it by the engineering number rather than the part number. I can't think of the engineering number right off the top of my head, but if I come across it I will post it.

These are the two pages from my 85 EVTM on wiper switch testing. Not sure if it's different for an 86 or not. Wouldn't think so, they both used the same parts for the wiper system (at least on the passenger side of the firewall).

Long time ago, I had the same issue with my 82 Bronco, and was able to find a new interval governor. Dont remember if it was new or from a junkyard, but that fixed the problem. I would imaging that the governor is used across a lot of Fords.
