That's just stupid. Oil gets dirty, dirt = damages motor, clogged coil filter = starved motor = damaged motor. "but the additives do wear out, and sludge does build up....
" ...yeah so it DOES go bad then, right?
It does go bad, but the 3year/3000 mile rule is more of a marketing gimmick than an actual requirement.
There are places that you can send a sample of your oil in for analysis that will tell you when a good time for a change is. There are some guys that ONLY change their oil when the analysis says so...and they go 9000 or so miles on conventional oil.
I do agree that it's not hard to spend $20 and 20 mins to do an oil change now and then, but my whole point is that if you think your engine is gonna blow up as soon as it passes 3000 miles is a little silly.
