Something I just noticed recently, I was merging onto the highway last week in 2nd gear (2.73's) and at WOT no smoke in 2nd, shift to 3rd no smoke at first but right around 3500-4000 rpm I could feel the car stumble a bit and noticed black smoke coming out of the tailpipes. Yesterday I got on it in 4th gear on the highway to pass and it did a similar thing in the same rpm range as it did in 3rd gear. Lower gears do not produce this behavior even at WOT. The engine runs excellent (82k miles), stock everything under the hood besides a 70MM MAF from a 94-95 5.0 stang, 87 octane, stock timing (or should I say I've never touched the timing since I purchased it in March of this year).
What are some things I should check here...plugs, fuel pressure, noticeable fuel leaks at the injectors/rail, timing?
