I got a 70mm MAF from a 95 Mustang last weekend and installed it but kept getting a low voltage code so I swapped out the electronics from my stock MAF into the new one and got rid of the code, is there any difference between the two or does it need the electronics from a 94-95 to be right? The car runs great and has more power but I'm not sure about the air/fuel ratio with the old electronics in the larger housing.

This is installed on a 96 Explorer motor that was just rebuilt with Mustang cam for my 90 GT.

Yes you need the correct Sensor for the Meter, they are not meant to be swapped around like that.

What does it actually do to cause a problem? It seems to run fine and both are for for 19lb injectors. Why would I get the low voltage at MAF code with the one from the 70mm MAF, is it definitely bad if I don't get the code with the other? I got no code with the stock MAF reconnected or after the electronics were swapped.

The transfer curve will not be right. In other words, the voltage output of the sensor will not match the computer's calculations for the correct fuel/air ratio. It may be rich or lean at the top or bottom of the RPM range. If you had a Tweecer RT and a wide band A/F gauge, you could change the computer's transfer curve to match the meter.

So I should go get one from another 94-95 Mustang or one from one of the other vehicles that came with the 70mm meter, since the one was giving me a low voltage code does that mean it is bad or is there something else I am missing? I have a warranty so I can swap it out for free, just want to hopefully eliminate having to go back multiple times for the sensor. The one that gave me the CEL code was making the idle surge between 600 and 1000rpms while cold. Is it OK to swap the sensor from the 95 Mustang to a 94 sensor or do they need to be replaced together?

Just swap the sensor itself. See the list below for compatible models and years that you can use the sensor from.

MAF & sensor interchange
The 94-95 Mustang 5.0 MAF & sensor is also found on:

1995-94 Mustang 3.8L F2VF-12B579-A2A,
1994-92 Crown Victoria 4.6L F2VF-12B579-A2A,
1995-94 Mustang, Mustang Cobra 5.0L F2VF-12B579-A2A,
1994-92 Town Car 4.6L F2VF-12B579-A2A,
1994-92 Grand Marquis 4.6L F2VF-12B579-A2A,
Evidently the –A1A, -A2A, AA, etc. on the end of the part number is a minor variant that did not change the operating specs. You should be able to ignore it and have everything work good.

Thanks, I'll see about getting one tomorrow and swapping it out to see if I notice a change, I cut the flange off the housing so I was hoping the sensor was all that needed to be swapped out.

Too many football games on today to get to the U-Pull yard but I will go tomorrow and get another one and swap it out, might get a 3G Alternator while I am there also. If I upgrade the Alt. I should be able to put my under-drive pulleys back on and not have the problems charging I had before.

Yep, 3G Alt is another good upgrade, just make sure you grab a 130 Amp and not a 95 Amp.

Should be a label with the amp output on it.

I got the MAF sensor today and put it in and have no Check Engine codes or light, I didn't get the Alt. but checked and they have plenty of them, might order the 4gauge wire and fuse off ebay this week and get the Alt. next weekend, might look at an electric fan also.

Slow but sure, trying to sell a set of valve covers so I can get the other parts I want, might have them sold and they will buy the Alt, wiring, and the electric fan......maybe even an aluminum drive shaft from an Aerostar.

go back to the JY and find a fan from a mid 90's V6 taurus and then buy a flex a lite 33054 controller. One of the best setups you can find and using an OEM fan.

I have heard the Taurus fans work good and one from a 95-00 v6 contour work with no fitment issues, I need to see which will work best for me and then I'll get one or the other.

Google the 130 amp vs the 95 and you will see the difference in 4 and 2 holes in the case.
