I'm sure I'm not the first to ask this, but I can't find a definite answer regarding this question. I have a 1994 Mustang GT and would like to upgrade the stock lower/upper intake manifold to the 1993 Cobra lower/upper intake manifold. I have torn my engine apart and have all the possible required parts. My questions are, will this swap really work? I have heard both yes it will work and no it won't work. Will this arrangement clear the strut tower and the strut tower brace? The lower cobra manifold has three extra threaded inlets (towards the rear of the manifold) that the stock does not have - can I plug those holes keeping the integrity of the lower cobra manifold? I have a Professional Products elbow (70mm) which works great, lines up perfectly; however, the upper cobra manifold has a place for the EGR also. Can that be blocked with a EGR delete plate and place the EGR on the elbow or do I have to get a new set (EGR, throttle body and MAF) up for the 1993 Cobra intake? If I swap all items from the stock to the cobra, is there anything else I need to do? Will the EGR tube (EGR to header) still fit? Will the throttle and cruise cable still work correctly? I have the following items also included in the swap: 70mm FRPP throttle body, 24 lb FRPP injectors and 1994-95 C&L 76mm MAF kit (Black tube).....hoping this swap will work. Any help/advice would be much appreciated.

  • The manifold holes could be plugged.
  • The EGR holes on the upper can be plugged.
  • It probably won't work with the stock strut tower brace (my tubular GT40 didn't fit)
  • If you use the EGR fittings on the elbow, the EGR tube may or may not fit. On mine, the EGR tube was about 1" too short.
  • Throttle/cruise will still work fine if you use the elbow.

As for tips:
I've had decent luck with Permatex copper sealant on the gaskets, but I will be trying Threebond 1194 next time. IN theory, you shouldn't need a sealant, but that never works.

To remove the old gaskets, aircraft paint remover is AWESOME. Use some of that and you can avoid sanding for the most part. Make sure the surfaces are smooth and DRY.

Other than that I don't really have anything else. It's a straightforward swap.

I think you are going to find out real quick it's not as easy as they say it is. What they are forgetting is the built in EGR on the Cobra's. Once you install that elbow you will find out your throttle/cruise cables are now too short. I'm sure your EGR tube will be about 1 1/2 off now as well. Aftermarket intakes don't come with a snout/built in EGR, that's why we need the adapter and fox cars need the EGR spacer. Cobra's have these already.
