Some brief background info on my motor:

I just bought my 01 GT, (this is only the second night I’ve owned it) and the previous owner swears the motor in the car is not the original. He said the original owner blew the first motor and the 4.6 currently installed is a 99 corwn Vic interceptor. I would like to verify this but have looked for a vin or some kind of identifiying marks or characters on the block so I can know for sure what is in the car.

Also for future use when I need to upgrade parts on the motor I need to know what is in my car.

Does anyone know where to look to find any identifying marks? Any help is gravely appreciated. The only indentifying numbers I can find are listed below, but everywhere I look, these numbers don’t mean a thing.

The 1999 Crown Vic would have come with a SOHC non-PI Romeo iron block.

The 2001 Mustang GT would have come from the factory with a SOHC PI Romeo iron block.

IF the swap is indeed true this is a significant down grade in motor performance!

FWIIW, Ford does not put VIN numbers on motors. There aren't any numbers that tie a motor to a specific car. But the sand casting numbers in the heads will tell you if you have a PI or non-PI heads.

Note, the oil filler cap is on the left side which is consistent with a non-PI motor.

Just wondering. Did you buy this car from a friend? Did you get it for a really good price? Because if you are really looking to upgrade this car likely one of the upgrades to be considered might be a PI motor.

If this were my car and the swap is true, first I would be hopping mad. Then after a cool down period, likely I would:
  • Drive the car assuming that it drives well as a daily driver.
  • Not spend any $$ on "bolt on" upgrades.
  • If it was a "friend" that sold the car, then some consideration should be given to the Friend V2.0 upgrade.

I just got the car from Craigslist. According to the photos it’s not a PI motor. Which I can only assume would put me at 200hp like other standard crown Vic’s? I am livid at the moment. I posted a photo and can’t believe it’s a)non pi and b)a huge downgrade.
