A/C isnt working, can it be refilled?

Hey,

Im thinking of buying a 94 Mustang GT.

Anyways the A/C doesnt work on it anymore. What would I have to do to get it working again?

Is it just a simple refill? If so which coolant does that year take? (Also I'm in Canada if that matters).

Or will I need a new compressor, etc....

Just want to see how much money it would cost to fix this.

Thanks

We use the newer and cheaper (lucky you) freon R134. You can buy it about anywhere. I would guess it'll cost you a bottle just to figure out what's wrong with it. Hopefully it's just a leak and you can change hoses, fix fittings, or whatever. If the pump doesn't kick on, then it'll be pricey.

I would start by hooking up a vacuum pump to the system and see if holds a vacuum. If it does, bypass the LPS, then add r-134a to the low pressure side (drivers side) until the low side pressure is ~35psi, and enjoy the cool air!

My a/c leaks from both high/low side ports, so I have to plug them once I am done filling. Very common.

just curious: how are you plugging the leaks? i damaged my high-side hose during the engine swap and the coolant leaked out due to a hole/crack in the hose. i was hoping to plug them somehow (but i'm iffy because it's the high-pressure side) because the hose new is over $150...

to the original poster: after months of trying to fix the a/c myself, i would definately suggest you have it checked by a professional. i thought i had a leaky evap, but it turned out my compressor was bad. a new compressor and a refill meant cold a/c! too bad i damaged the high-pressure hose during my engine swap, though...
