? about speaker hole

I bought some 5x7s for the rear of my 92 and they are the wrong mounting depth but I knew that. I was wondering if it would be ok to cut a notch out of the metal that blocks it? If you look inside the opening you can see what I am talking about.

Hmmm, well if its the actual metal ON the door, like the sheet metal, then go ahead and cut. However, if you are talking about metal inside of the door, then I wouldnt do it. Its there for a reason, whether it be support, or something for the window. If you need to, just buy a speaker adapter, like 1/2 inch or 1 inch thick and then mount the speaker on top of that. That way you dont have to make any long term changes to the car like cutting metal.

Actually these are the speakers that are beside the rear seat in my hatchback. I would like to keep it looking stock if possible but that might not happen if the metal I want to cut into is too important. Does anyone have any install pics of aftermarket 5x7/6x8s that I could use as an idea. Maybe I could do a fiberglass mold of the stock speaker grills and mount the new speakers on the outside of them instead of hiding them behind it.

You can cut the metal behind it. I did and so far I have not had any problems (1year now). I made a fiberglass bucket behind the speaker where I cut the metal out so the speaker wouldn't be "free air". Sounds so much better that way. Don't know if it would help with your speakers or not.

Thanks x2cstang, thats good to know you haven't had any poroblems so far. I am just going to get some foam baffles to put behind it to insulate it a little.
