when the ac is not on the compressor just started making a humming or whining noise, but when i engage the ac,the noise stops.does it mean i need a new compressor?i sprayed some lubricant down there but the noise only goes away when the ac is turned on.never did this before, started today.suggestions anyone?since it cycles on and off it can't be the clutch, bearing maybe?if it is,is it a easy fix or a dealer fix?how much $$$ if anybody knows?

Could be the bearings in the coil pulley going bad. I've done mine and a friends Bullitt. Pretty much the same symptoms until the bearing goes completely and then makes noise all the time.

Had this on my GM.
Same symptoms and it eventually started making the noise all the time.
I replaced the pulley/clutch/coil assembly and it fixed it.

I just had something similar happen to my Expedition. I just left it until the noise got really bad, then took it into a shop that I trust They ended up replacing the entire system. $1100 later the noise is gone.

It should be cheaper on a Stang as the expedition has 2 of everything...

yes it makes noise only when its off and free wheeling.when its on the noise goes away.what manuals or info did you use to relace the bearings?can you buy the bearings from the dealer?are the compressors made by ford or another supplier and if so,who makes them.i'd like to fix it myself!
