ac compressor

Ok, so all the shops are telling me if they replace the ac compressor they also have to replace the dryer and something else in order to get a warranty.


My question is, are they just saying that to make more money? Could i just tell them to replace "just" the ac compressor and then don't worry about any warranty?

btw if my ac compressor drags on the belt whenever i have it on then that means the ac compressor is messed up but the clutch itself is fine right?

They are concerned with system contamination. A flush of the system should be performed anyhow but in the Auto business, you try to do it halfway decently the first time so the car isnt a comeback.

If I went as far as having a shop do the work, I'd let them replace the other stuff (within reason, logically and financially) because contamination is a real concern.

You might want to touch base with Danny (Wytstang). IIRC he just had his system gone through and some stuff replaced. He might have some insight from the shop's perspective.

I just did my ac. I bought the parts from napa and installed them myself( compressor, dryer, upper line kit and orafice tube), then took it to an ac shop to have the condensor and evaporator flushed in order to get the warrenty from napa. I had 3 ac shops give me prices from $1080 to $1200. Did the wrench turning myself and spent a little over $650 total parts and labor (for the flush and ac charge). ICE COLD every since.

dang!!! i was counting on "cheaping out" because i can't afford to do it right, lol. I would if I didn't just have my power steering pump and rack and pinion replaced

I guess i'll just have to wait till i have some extra cash.

I disagree. You need to know the cause of the compressor failure in order to make that determination. I replaced nothing but the compressor. Guess what? Two years later, still as good as new. Just some nice, ice cold AC.

you might get by with it as Matt has but the reason u replace the dryer and orffice tube is because the dryer has a desicant bag in it that is there to trap moisture and the orffice tube has a small filter on it also. If system has been open or has a leak then moisture can get in the system and it is only so much that the filters can handle. If too much gets in the system it will disrupt the oil flow thru the system which could cause alot of damage. The oil is carried thru the system by the freon.
Plus if the compressor actually has damage the metal from compressor could get all thru the system.
