Accelerating too fast?

I just went to get some gas and on the way home I'm at a light next to a middle aged man. He gives me the"light um up signal" so i oblige. I give a little 2000 rpm clutch dump and these slick north east ohio streets don't do much to keep the wheels from spinning so I get a pretty good wheel spin. Well...... theres a statey I don't see waiting to turn onto our street and sure enough he sees me. He hits the lights, I pull over, and we go thru the whole process. He says "I got you for accelerating too fast back there".
wtf is that?lol He let me off with a warning but what the hell is accelerating too fast?

It would also fall under an "Exhibition of Speed" violation in many states. You can't smoke 'em and just stay under the limit.

i got nailed for a 2nd gear chirp once during my college days. it was a $60 ticket for exhibition of speed. never accelerated too fast or broke the speed limit, just shifted fast and chirped it.

to the OP, if you were not accelerating too fast, the tires would not have lost traction. simple as that. accelerating too fast has been around for a long time.

I'd like to see how that would hold up in court if you got a ticket and challenged it in court. It's not like they can prove it like a speeding ticket or something.....

in nashville that would be wreckless driving..and i would not suggest challenging it most judges here take an officers testimony as proof enough(rightfully so)..just be thankful he gave a warning i know i would have stopped you if you did that in front of me

I'm not questioning the validity of it, and I'm not saying I wasn't in the wrong.. I had just never heard of "accelerating too fast" before in my 26 years.

In CA when I was growing up, that would get you an “exhibition of speed “ citation (or warning)
Or wreckless driving if sever enough. Bottom line,, you failed to control your vehicle, and operate it within it’s capabilities (breaking traction) I of course never do this…………….. just stay out of my way please at on ramps…. It’s just merging with traffic,,,, right???
If you spin at take off, slide the rear around a corner, or anything like that, there is a citation of one sort or another your eligible for Id have to guess, in all 50 states.

Simply “accelerating too fast” I’d like to see the code that covers that . What are the elements of the violation?

Speed Contests/Exhibitions of Speed (Veh. Code, § 23109) Misdemeanor/Felony

No person shall engage in any motor vehicle speed contest, or aid and abet in any such contest, upon a highway. "Motor vehicle speed contest" means a motor vehicle racing against another vehicle, a clock, or other timing device.

No person shall engage in any motor vehicle exhibition of speed, or aid and abet in any such exhibition, upon any highway. This offense includes excessive acceleration so as to cause the tires to scream loudly and lose traction. (Grier (1964) 226 Cal.App.2d 360; 38 Ops. Atty. Gen. 102.)

This is such a ridicules law. Basically it should be called the you can not enjoy your car law. So what if you spin the tires, its not like you are endangering anyone if your not even moving, oh wait you are endangering the life of your tires so that deserves a ticket. I can understand if you are sliding the car around a corner, lighting the tires up with other cars behind you or speeding. The US stands for FREEDOM……………come…on…, I should be able to accelerate my car as fast as I want as long as I don’t go over the speed limit. I tell you when I here things like this it just tickets me off.

I think you’re forgetting that driving is a privilege you are granted by the state providing you abide by the rules they’ve laid out, not a constitutional right handed down to you by your Forefathers.

You howling your tires at an intersection, or coming off hard at the light might make someone else pay less attention to what they're doing because they're too busy looking to see who the jackass making all the noise is. The bottom line is, is that any time you’re breaking traction between the tires and the pavement you’re not in control of your vehicle!

I feel like a ticket for chirping into second would be semi-easy to fight... You can say that you missed the shift and the engine revved high and the RPMs hadn't dropped enough by the time you popped it back into gear...

That would have been my question for him......Officer if i accelerated too quickly, then how fast di YOU accelerate to catch me to write up this stupid warning.

Come on guys ... take any of these reasons why it's "okay" to court, preach it to the judge and watch him UP your fine for insulting his intelligence, lol. In the minds of those that wrote the laws, losing traction for no good reason is wreckless. End of story. Light 'em up (I do from time to time and love it), just pay the fine and don't whine about it
