advancing timing, need some clarity

This may sound really stupid, but I've never heard detonation before so I really don't know what to listen for. My other car pings if I don't put 93 octane in it, so I know what pinging sounds like. I do know that detonation is bad, so I'm assuming that I'll hear something out of the ordinary, but I just want to be sure.

Also, will I even be able to hear it at WOT, since my car's pretty loud. Thanks.

read timing here if you dont know..

Pinging/detonation are two different words used to describe the same phenomenon. If you want to understand more about it, go to the link; it's MUCH more complex than sidewayz' inaccurate description. Check the link out -- http://www.motorcycle.com/mo/mcrob/rt-fuel2.html --- great description of what it is (a sonic/ultrasonic phenomenon born of localized pressure/temperature conditions that cause the mixture to self ignite - usually at the wrong time).

Advance is necessary mainly because the amount of time it takes the mixture to burn is relatively fixed; however, as the rpm's increase, there's less and less time for the burn to occur. Therefore, if you want it to occur at the optimum time relative to piston location, you have to start the burn earlier and earlier as the revs increase. Pretty simple really.

Thanks, I always thought gas ping and detonation was same thing but now i know for sure. :nice:
