advice on painting interior

i have decided to change the interior of my 91gt from grey to black... some pieces i have ordered off ebay some i will get from 50resto or whatever they call themselves now...but some pieces that dont get touched that often or at all im going to spray them black...can anybody give me some advice?? like what should i clean them with?? any tips on spraying?? any help would be great

For what it's worth, i swapped my red interior over to a black interior using 90% of the OEM black parts from the parts car.


I was missing a few small trim peices and the center console, so i painted some parts.

After a few months, the painted stuff looked like junk compared to the OEM stuff. I'm not talking about flaking off, but you could see the color difference in the sunlight and it looked cheap.

Needless to say, now every peice in my interior is 100% OEM (minus the new ACC carpets)

I've heard a lot of dudes have had good luck with that Fusion brand of paint by Krylon. It's made specifically for painting plastic items.

how did the carpet fit and where did u get it?....i will have to buy new carpet as well

I haven't actually installed them yet. I got em from 5.0 restoration. I got the jute backed carpet and hatch carpet

I used the VHT dye (Summit) and the vinyl prep spray (5oh Resto). That prep spray is the poop's poop! It'll take the factory color right off the plastics and prep it for the new dye. Spray it on, wait a few minutes, wipe it off using a huge pile of lint free rags.

My only complaint about the prep spray is that there's instructions on the can. So the first couple of pieces I did, I didn't know to wipe the factory paint off. Good stuff though.

Don't do like Mr.Bean with an open paint can and some TNT

Go to a junk yard and pick up some cheap plastic parts and practice, if you like how it turns out, take apart the Mustang.

after i spray it is there anything else i have to do to it? what will i be able to clean it with so i dont hurt the paint?

I used a heavy degreaser anything you would purchase at pepboys, then I ordered some VHT Vinyl and Fabric Dye, stuff worked great, I did an entire interior including the seats with 12 can's you couldnt tell it was dyed I have pics on my old computer ill have to find.

I'm late here but I have to comment on the color match products from 50resto..I repainted my interior some two yrs ago and not only is the color match perfect it REALLY restored the brilliance of the factory interior color. We tend to not notice how much fadding actually occurs over the yrs (not to mention smoke and dirt buildup). Once redone..the interior was fresh and any undyed pcs looked tired and dirty, so of course they too needed to be redone. The foremost important factor in longlasting and quality appearance is PREP...use the prep sprays and clean the parts several times...several..prior to applying color. Second is apply in multiple light coats with good dry time between. I use typical cleaners on my interior and to date the interior is factory fresh on all pcs done.
