So for Advance Metals class I need to do a final project. I can make whatever I want. Our idea has to be submitted tomorrow and we have all quarter to work on it. So I thought i'd make something for the Stang. The problem is I don't know what to make.

I thought subframe connectors would be a good idea, but have only found one alright write up from MustangsandFords webpage. It's not very detailed though. A con to doing these though is that if i made them at school I would have to bring my car into the shop every morning with 12 other students doing their stuff. It's a small shop and I don't trust any one of them around my baby. I could do most of it at home though, i'll have to ask the teacher if I can.

Ok so anyways, I need ideas! And who better to ask than fellow mustangers!? Thanks in advanced for your ideas.

My Budget-I think i'll limit my budget to around $100-200.
My Skills-I have little welding skills (I have done welding in the past but not enough to be good), but they'll get better as this class goes on. I have my own gas mig welder and the school has a really nice mig, an ancient tig, arc welders, oxy/actlyene, and a plasma cutter.

why not do some tubular control arms or adjustable strut rods instead? you wouldn't necessarily have to bring teh car in to work on it. just buy some used junk pieces to get the dimensions you need. or maybe do some caliper brackets for a big disc brake conversion or something

Metal panel would be to easy and i dont think there is too much welding involved in that. If i was any good at tig welding (haven't tried yet) i'd do a fuel cell. My brother actually said he could make me one, he made the one for their formula car at college.

Tubular control arms sound to hard and I don't trust myself with something like that that is a major part of the suspension. I also just upgraded the whole suspension, so... The adjustable strut rods sound interesting, I wouldnt even know where to start with those though. I also just did a disc brake swap.

Keep them coming!

Engine hoist. It's something you can use over and over.

A shaker base and midplate to fit my car... out of aluminum of course with the look of the fabricated valve cover look. Damn things are expensive for a beat up old one...

I have a shop class too and I have been thinking about doing something for the Mustang. I have thought of; mcb, sub-frame connectors, an air box for use with a cowl/hood scoop, the underride bars, and an export brace. I think if you did a general chassis "kit" of your own it would be a good project. I think $100-200 should cover that amount of metal and hardware.

What are underride bars? Export brace is an interesting idea.

The thing is, I don't think im really all that capable of making something without directions, i'm just not that skilled yet. So I like directions to follow.

here is something i did for a 71 cougar. however, this might be a little more than you have experience to do. it can give you an idea of what to make...

another thing i always wanted to make for the cougar is a custom gauge cluster for the dash.

Heres the plans for underrides (shelby traction bars). They bolt up to the leaf spring plate and weld/bolt??? foward to the frame.

A reinforcement plate for the firewall, around the brake, clutch and steering wheel opening.

A one-piece underhood brace like the Maier Racing one (check Mustang Depot's web site for a pic).

A bracket for mounting a "CNC" brand hyrdaulic slave cylinder to a T-5 for use with a "late model" bell housing. You could go into production with these and might make some money.

The underriders sound cool, but what about some '65 Shelby overriders?

Make your own rollerized spring perches and idler arm.

I know you want something to put on your car but rotisserie would be nice to make your car better.

This is what I was talking about, better than the Shelby ones in my opinion.

This is a very good idea, I was considering doing it. You could also fab up a T5 crossmember, it is not too hard to do, but if you want it to look good you would have to put a little time and effort into it. Would be well worth it though.
