Aerostar al driveshaft ?

There is a good write up on this in the salvage yard sticky but, here is my question. I know from what I have read that the drive shaft needs to be from a 92-97 AWD but, today while at a local yard, I found a 10 of 94 aerostar that said ELECTRONIC 4 WHEEL DRIVE on the side. Will that drive shaft work or should the van have AWD on it somewhere instead? I would have taken it while I was there but I got there late in the day & came poorly prepared to remove it. I only had a couple wrenches with me and bent my 12 mm trying to remove the bolts. I just wanted to know if this shaft will work before I waste my time going back with bigger equipment.

Keep in mind that the AeroStar driveshaft is a 3" diameter unit. The Ford Racing part is 3.5" diameter, and is stronger than the AeroStar. It is also a lot more expensive.

good point on measuring. I was going to do that if no one knew for sure. I can get this one for 20 bucks and with what little I have done to the car so far, I dought I will make enough power to brake it. Just going for a little weight reduction for now. Thanks for the tips guys

Ford had a huge recall on Aerostar aluminum driveshafts. If the driveshaft has the front yoke and the rear flange "banded" on, instead of being welded, stay away from it like the plague. The driveshafts that were banded would not hold up to the torque of the V-6, let alone a V-8.

I can't believe there still junkyards out there that have aerostars in them.
There is only 4 aerstars on ebay, and i don't think i've ever seen one in a junkyard.
I guess up here in nj where the population is a little more dense, yards don't have the room to keep vehicles they would deem useless.

Thanks trbkrb for reseaching that. I plan on measuring it just to be sure. I plan on going back to the jard tomorrow or tuesday. if its still there and is the right lenght, I'll be sure to post what I come up with. Thanks again to all.

Our Pick a Part yards have MANY of them. When I got my 5 lug axles, I had the choice of about 10 to pull my axles from. But we don't have many 4WD ones down south, and the ones I've seen, the shafts were bent from being forklifted.

Maybe we should all be hitting up 90stang5speed to pull some more awd aerostar driveshafts for us then, haha! You get em for $20...I'd pay $40 plus shipping, that's a quick 20 bucks for removing a few bolts :D
