Air Bag Safety or not?????????

Stangsters are the fox srs air bag safety systems dependable?
Do these systems require maintenance/
Do they complicate the access of repairing other problems?
Do they go off over bumps ect??
Are they worth the hassle?
Maybe the pre 90 foxes are the way to go, or a later improved system?
Give me feed back experiences ect.

i personally HATE air bags. i know people that were killed or injured and no one that was saved by them.

they normally do not require any maintenance. if something breaks, they will set a code.

you'll need to temporarily disable them when working on the steering wheel, or near a sensor.

speed bumps - no, front air bags are designed to only inflate on a frontal impact that produced a set amount of negative g's.

i know many people that have disabled them, with and without permission from the feds.

However, figures don't lie. Also, talk to *any* cop, ER person, ambulance person, etc. Air bags save thousands of lives and prevent very severe injuries EVERY day!

Like cjones said, the *FORD* (and GM) air bag systems are pretty much bullet proof, VERY ******VERY****** SAFE and so on.

I've spent over a dozen years on the forums telling people STRAIGHT OUT they are 110% FULL OF IT when they spew PURE AND TOTAL BS stories about FORD/GM air bags "just going off".

I've taught control/response systems and I've been designing them for over a dozen years. The PURE AND TOTAL BS that I hear about air bags is amazing!

It's as PURELY MORONIC as the TOTAL MORONS that SWEAR that "adjusting" the TPS "does something". Gee, I know 14 year-olds that could tell those MORONS "here is the EEC code that I downloaded - SHOVE YOUR BS RICER MYTH!". For the TPS RICER MYTH, ANYONE with HALF A BRAIN can learn assembler code, then read the EEC code for themselves - ANYONE! Yet, it took 5+ years of death threats to me before enough people stopped believing that STUPID RICER myth .

Now, what does that have to do with air bags? Well, like I said, ANYONE can see that the TPS RICER myth is a RICER MYTH! But, to understand the GM/Ford air bags systems of the 80's and 90's requires a reasonable understanding of physics, magnetics, electronics, chemistry, mechanical engineering, etc. Basically, an EE/ME person. So, it's understandable why there can be so much WRONG information on air bag systems.

It is sad that ******* that don't KNOW a DAMN thing about what they are talking about spew BS that others then believe.

I know that you can find plenty of web sites and forum posts that are full of total BS! So what?

You want BS? Here: Adjust your TPS to 0.999999v and you'll gain 50,000 HP, your engine will be 100% pollution-free, and you'll be able to drive the rest of your life on one tank of gas. It MUST be true! Heck, you just read it on the web!

cjones is very rare! Although he does not like them, he did give HONEST information. Again, he has my great respect!

Not quite sure why your rant went from airbags to the TPS. But to comment on it, adjusting the TPS is a good way for people with aftermarket TBs to realign the TPS with the PCM and has been proven to improve idle on many cars, including mine.

However, getting back to the airbags....

Statistically speaking airbags save lives, when used properly....IE with your seat belt. It is called a SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) for a reason. In a hard, front end collision, they have been known to reduce injury and death in thousands of accidents.

The flip side of that is that the first generation airbags were archaic at best. With front crash sensors that felt frontal impact as opposed to reading the shock of the passenger compartment, they had a tendency to go off when they were not needed. So in thousands of cases, the airbag was deployed in much lower speed impacts, causing injury that would not have happened in a non-airbag car. So I can see the opinion of someone who does not like airbag systems, depending on their personal experience. I was personally in an accident 15 years ago where I walked away unharmed because I was NOT wearing a seatbelt. It was a rollover accident in my 84 Pontiac T1000, I was not wearing a seatbelt and during the rollover my body was thrown across the two front seats, so I was basically laying across the front seats when the roof collapsed. The roof collapsed into a point above the drivers seat that crushed the drivers seat head rest, due to the a-pillars being bent inwards. I had both the crash scene investigator and the firemen at the scene tell me that it was the first time they had ever seen an accident where the lack of a seatbelt saved me from serious injury and possibly death.

That said, I NEVER go out without my seatbelt. Sure, I was in one of those 1-in-a million accidents, but statistically speaking, seatbelts save lives and I do not drive without one today.

So the bottom line is that airbags save lives, but they can also cause injury. However, if you play the odds....you will see that airbags save many more lives than they do kill someone. Even if the numbers of saved lives vs. people injured by airbags were the same, I would rather risk injury and potentially save my life. A broken nose is something I will gladly take if it means saving my life.

Of course I say all of that and I have an 88 Mustang with no airbags, which doesn't bother me.

The most important thing to remember if you are driving a Mustang with first generation airbags....do NOT...EVER pick your nose while behind the wheel. If you were ever in a fender bender that set off the airbags, you could send your fist through the back of your skull. And that's one to grow on.
