Air box modification....

If there's a thread on this already, just slap me and point me in the right direction.

I have a question about a 98 GT. Has anyone removed the rubber fender boot from the air filter box to perhaps lessen air restriction ?....did it help, get loud ? or did the paper filter get wet while driving in rain ? I know I could invest in a mega-buck CAI, but all of the ones I've seen seem to just suck-in hot engine compartment air.

You can remove the cone rubber silencer. It won't make the car louder or faster, but you may see +1 or +2 hp or a mpg here or there. If you were to invest in a CAI either get the JLT, Steeda or Stack Racing from AM. In fact AM has the Stack Racing CAI on sale for $120.

The hot engine air being put into the engine is just a myth..how long do you really think the air sits in the pipe? It really takes about as much time for you to blink for it to go from the filter into the combustion chamber so anybody that says ram air intakes kill IAT's are full of it.

Air silencer delete mod is free and worth it. It`ll add probably zip but then again a CAI without a tune is worth about the same. Great way to blow $200 for some engine bling. The stock intake does a good job whether people like to admit it or not and outflows half the aftermarket junk.
The silencer is there to do just that, make things a bit quieter so that can be pulled out. Stick a K&N or equivalent in for the time being if you`re on a budget.

Won't make a difference with power either way. Will probably make more noise removed.

Only time you need to worry about heat soak is when you are boosted if hot lapping at the track.

I suppose even chilled air from outside the engine compartment would be heated by the time it got to the combustion chamber anyway.

Yes, when air is compressed it creates heat, but it's so negligible it doesn't really matter enough for it to be a factor. If your looking for a CAI, AM's Stack Racing piece is on sale for a very good price..
