Hey Stangnet tech gurus, my airbag light is flashing 10 times followed by a short pause and then flashing another 10 times, and cycling that pattern. I'm assuming this is airbag Fault Code 10 - Diagnostic Monitor Internal Thermal Fuse - Open Due to Intermittent Short To Ground.

Mustang 90-91 Air Bag Diagnostic Codes

I found the website above that is helpful, but I don't know where to start to fix the problem. Which wires in the harness should I check for broken insulation or contact with metal? Should I just replace the small blue box behind the HVAC controls? If I need to buy a new "blue box behind the HVAC conrtrols," what is the exact name of it so I know what to ask for at the dealership? Is it safe to assume that my clockspring is fine? Any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance guys.

Chris

Unfortunately, there's no easy way to find and debug the cause.

First, you'd need to get another air bag diagnostic controller. Then, AT MOST you may have TWO, AND ONLY TWO chances to read out the main error code. Chances are, if the controller doesn't blow it's fuse when you first install it and turn the ignition key to "on", if you then disconnect the battery WAIT 5+ mins, then you should have another TWO "key turn on events" before the diagnostic controller purposely blows it's internal fuse (to make sure that the air bag will not deploy because the sensors/wiring are bad).

Otherwise, I have the schematics and Ford diagnostic procedure listed. If those don't make sense, then I STRONGLY suggest that you take it to a shop to have it fixed. This is one of those problems that could get expensive (blown air bag) and dangerous (if you short out an air bag wire while screwing around under the dash, while the air bag is still in the car).

Sorry, but that's the straight and honest answer. I think that air bags and ABS systems are very important. But, *I* am not going to suggest that people do something that I know is risky to them.

Good Luck.

Thank you for the honest reply.

Hypothetically, if one was to remove the diagnostic controller just long enough for a car to pass the safety portion of an inspection, would the airbag light cease to blink for that short period of time?

I'll absolutely get the airbag bug fixed properly by a shop once funds allow it, but if it's possible to make the warning light stop blinking just long enough to not alert the inspector that something's wrong, that would be great.

I'd ditch the airbag all together, think about it, whats that airbag gonna do if you get into an accident... chances are with early airbags, its gonna do more harm than good

Hey 1991vert ,is that audible beeping noise your talking about sound like a little radio speaker making an irritating noise coming from somewhere behine the middle ac vents? Cause i had some weird noise coming from there a few weeks back and now is gone. I dont have an airbag,i got rid of it when i changed steering wheels 3 years ago. I hope that noise never comes back.
