Alternative Alternators?

Posted this over on the Classic board as well...

Anybody running non-standard alternator locations? For example: Driveshaft driven, water pump driven, fabricated to run off the flexplate, etc.

I found this thread on the interweb...interesting ideas.

I would think a driveshaft driven alternator with a trunk mount battery would be ideal for cleaning up the engine bay. The only drawback being that the alternator doesn't charge while the vehicle is stopped.

another problem you might have with the alternator being driven by the driveshaft is the speed. is its gonna spin fast enough to make it charge? you would have to have some goofy pulley set up to get it to work. your best bet for getting it out of the way where people cant see it is to somehow fab up a bracket to mount it really low in the engine bay

Oh my.

The idea about using the flywheel's ring gear was what came to my mind first (it was also posted on that thread).

If there are any other accessories on the car, someone could also rig up some gears and a jackshaft to drive the alt (remotely).

I'd rather have solar panels all over the car than using the DS for the alt. That's just me though.
