Am I getting played with? or is this really the case about cams?

thats a good question... i was under the impression that if u buy the xcal2 which is $400 from mph, they will give u a custom tune on the programmer already, but i couldnt really see any info about that on their website so they might have changed that...

does anyone have any sound clips of vt stage 1's at idle and stuff? preferably without headers and a bassani x? lol i know i am getting picky but i have been looking around and i found a video of a mean sounding stage 2... but no stage 1's...
also, where do u guys recomend looking for used stuff? if i could find a deal on a used blower, i think i might rather just do that... i just really dont wanna spend $3900...

pulling the motor is not needed,it could be done in the car.just do the install yourself then take it to them to time and degree them.fill the cylinders with air to change the valve springs then throw the cams in and have them do the rest.prob save you a ton.might as well go stage 2s if your going to put cams in anyway.

alright i'll hit you up if i have my car.... lol i just had to buy new tires because a razorblade on the freeway just sliced up a tire up real good :( and i had to buy a new pair. So i'll be gettin two tires mounted and balanced about that time.

Heres a soud clip thats not too great because the camera was so far away from the car, but if you listen carefully, you can hear the lope (VT stage 1's)

I have heard from multiple stang owners that Stage 2's are not the greatest for everyday drivability and reliability for several reasons. Stage 2 and 3 make more power above 6000rpms, but that doest seem to be to good for the rear end and the rest of the stock enternals in the motor. I heard stage 2's also lose a fair amount of low end torque (which could be partly made up for by 4.10s possibly) Also for more aggressive cams, better intake and better flowing heads will be needed to make the most of your new cams. Everyone is telling me that the car really will not handle revving above 6000 rpms on a daily basis without a new rear end and some mild engine work. Also if you're not doing the install, valve springs will add a little bit to the installation/labor bill.

well.....my car is my daily driver and my only means of getting to school and work...i would be concerned about the stage 2's because i wouldnt have the money right now for forged internals/head work, and beefing up the rear end. :shrug:

Tim @ MPH will send you a custom tune for a N/A car...he just wont mail a tune for a supercharged car unless its his mongoose setup.

And thanks :) . Well atleast they seem to work well with boost lol. And I made 292RWHP with them and my car went 12.7 @ 108.8 at the strip....so for auto X I think that will make your car plenty fast to keep up with with the older porsches and the new non turbo ones...along with the C5 vettes. :nice:

Stage 1s give you a broader powerband than the stg 2s...so its perfect for auto cross. The stg 2s loose power vs the stg 1s from 4000-4500RPM and down.

thats deffinately some good info.... i am pretty much set now on the stage 1's. maybe i will try to look at ur write up and see how hard it seems once i try to look at it for... a long time.. lol.. with the stage 1's though, would it be ok to run them without a tune? for a month? or maybe a few? how long also is the wait usually on them from the time i order them from vt? or is their a better, cheaper place to order?

I have one of Tim’s 93 octane custom mail order tunes and it is well worth the money. The car feels like a totally different beast. They ask you all the necessary questions over the phone, even if you order online they still call you up to talk to you in person. Just tell them the mods you have and you will get one awesome tune in the mail. When I order a supercharger I know where I’m getting it from MPH, FTW:nice: :nice:

MPH sometimes has used superchargers for sale...i have seen/heard/read of some in the $2000-$2500 range before.

But doing the cam install yourself, it will only cost you the price of the cams. So $600ish and then the tune.

As for the tune, I drove around over a month beofre it was tuned...but one thing to note is that I didnt go WOT (well maybe once @ 2500RPM for just a split second haha). My car was lean before the cams, so I was especially worried. But I can tell you that my car didnt run very well untuned with the cams. SOOO with that said, yes you can drive around for a long time, but I personally would not go WOT until you atleast put it on a dyno and make sure your not running crazy lean and do not have detonation. :nice:

ok so i actually whent to mustang ranch today and i talked to them about stage 1 cams.. its absolutly ridiculous... the guy their that is most knowledgable about the newer stangs basically told me the stage 1 isnt worth it... he said they do have to pull the motor and they do have to degree the cams etc if they do do it.. even though its just a stage 1 cam... they are saying realistically its going to take 15-20 hours to do the install!!! he said that these engines ptv clearance area is low and the cams have to be degreed blah blah blah... 1500-2000 dollars worth.. they are charging 100 an hour... u guys that have had stage 1 cams installed by a professional, how much did u pay, how long did it take to do the work and how much is the hourly labor rate?
i am starting to get kinda discouraged because i really dont wanna spend crazy large amounts of money just on labor...
sorry guys i am just kinda upset... but hopefully if i keep looking around or w.e; maybe someone here has any ideas as to what i should do?

thats strange, who did you talk to at Apex? they do alot of work on modulars, theyre doing a locals 05GT, theyve already done h/c and a roush SC along with a slough of other suspension and drivetrain goodies (he would do it himself but no longer has the time or space). ive been down there twice and they are knowledgeable guys, id have to say some of the few id trust with my car, and thats saying alot, since i always like to do the work myself because i dont trust many that will do the work to my standards.

but i think 500-1000$ anywhere in there to do cams for a modular. its a PITA and takes time, if it was as easy as my dsm i wouldve done cams first mods. i havent done cams because of two reasons 1) too impatient and too much of a PITA to want to do it myself, 2) too expensive to pay others.

i talked to chris.. and i know they do suspension and bolt on s/c nitrous etc stuff on modular stangs, but he said they send all their engine internal and building stuff etc to mustang ranch..
i am kinda confused.. so did u get quotes for 500-1000?

Man that sucks :( . And I do a gree that a profession shop shoukld degree the cams in...they need to to cover their butts, just incase Ford let one cam gear get out of spec by accedent...but the price they want is STUPID.

Cams arent worth that much money...but please tell him that the VT stg 1 cams are real performers...and really the only reson stg 2 s outperform them on stock heads is due to MOST stg 2s getting the cams degreed in and 100% of them getting better valve springs. Those 2 things there gain power, and my car for one had neither done and still was RIGHT with the stg 2 cars...along with almost any other cams only GT out there I have seen. Not a huge difference.

Anywho, if your going to spend that kindof cash....supercharger all the way. Its crazy they want that sortof money :nonono:

yea i will just have to wait and see what i can get... at the same time i am gonna try to save another few thousand so if i dont find something cheaper, i will eventually (hopefully in 3-4 months) have enough for a mongoose kit...

i know chris and the new general manager craig (prez of Ca-mustangs club) and i've basically been in there just askin them about stuff once every few weeks for a long while now because they were in constant close connection with two of the mustang clubs i've been in. They know a lot about modifications, but their prices are STEEEEP and everytime they get ahold of a car to work on, it takes far longer than planned.

Theres one other place close by called Speed Merchant that is much like apex but works on camaros, corvettes and stangs with almost every mod BUT CAMS because they're not carb legal... its a bummer too because they know how to do it, but they've been caught installing illegal mods before and dont want to get penalized again.
