I have an issue. First off my Stang is a 2000 shell with 95 gts guts. My alternator wont charge. From what I read I absolutely have to have cluster to start alt. I got a custom dash piece. Is there any possible way around this? The custom piece was pricey. Been to long to return it. Any help would help....

Yup, the instrument cluster turns on the alternator. The power comes up to the instrument cluster , through the charge light with a bypass resistor and then to the alternator. You can bypass the instrument cluster with a resistor. The wire coming out of the fuse box to the cluster is red with a light green stripe, the wire going from the cluster to the alternator is light green with a red stripe.

On a side note, I just ordered another used instrument cluster, because my Speedo died.

You can run a switched 12v signal to the ignition switch and it’ll run the alt. That’s how I got by without having the light on the dash hooked up.

Essentially like that, pay no attention to the amperage rating or the chassis ground on the picture.

So no 510 ohms resistor either?

I've got plenty of them if you need another.

Yeah, I actually think he is right on this one. Most people just rip the resistor out of the back of the instrument cluster and join it with that. However, there isn't any reason I can think of to have one. The resistor is in the instrument cluster to ensure the light bulb lights up before the charge is bypassed, while at the same time ensuring the alternator continues to run if the light bulb blows.
