Another Gear Question but a little different

I got a quote from a shop in NJ for $760 for 3.73 Gears Install and Trac Loc Rebuild.

The pricing is as followed:
Gears-$180
Labor-$300
Installation Kit-$100
Fluids-$30
Trac-Loc Rebuild-$150
Grand Total-$760

So does this seem a little steep to anyone else? He said Labor is 300 because they completely blueprint the rear end and other shops due it in 2 hours but just slap it together but he does it right in 4.

I know gears are a must have and will compliment my soon to be installed intake nicely but this is a lot of money. I can almost buy a nice set of heads for that price. Think I should still shop around or is that about right?

I am having the same problem that you are..I also live in NJ, Trenton area, and I can not for the life of me find shop that will do this for a resonable price. I think 300 for install is good...what shop did you get this quote at? I think downs ford wants 500 for a install and LaRoccas wants 700! its crazy..Let me know if you find anything though..and ill do the same for you

Vader- How many miles are on your car? Mine has high mileage so I need a Trac-loc rebuild and it's suggested to do the bearings and stuff for the rear end.

ykr1-I got quoted 700 something from LaRoccas to and that's without the Trac-Loc rebuild I think. Thinking about it more careful it's not that bad I guess. It's a "blue-printed" rear end, trac loc rebuild and the gear install for $760.

:fuss: :bang:

That's why you need to start thinking about doing some of your own wrenching. Hell, for that much, you could probably pick up all the tools you need (dial caliper) and get the bearings pressed at a shop, and even upgrade the rear end (locker and 31 spline axels). That is, if you did the work on your own.

I have done all my own work on everything else with my car including the intake manifold I'm going to put on soon. However, everyone says if you don't know what you are doing with gears let the professionals do it. So don't come in here and assume I don't do anywork myself.

I talked to a buddy that races at one of the local circle tracks for a recomendation.

He set me up with a guy that charged me $150 for labor and $220 for all of the parts...

However this was not a trac-loc rebuild too. I'll do that myself later when it needs it. All you gotta do is take careful notes of where the shims are when you remove the carrier.

Naa, DIY. No need to be scared away from this project. Just read up everything you can on rear end builds, and you can handle it.

Besides, a shop can screw up an install too. You think a shop mechanic paid by the hour gives a whip about another Mustang rolling through? You would care, and you would do it right. And if you think you can just keep taking it back to them till they get it right, you should read some more posts on here and other sites recanting the horror stories of botched jobs and endless battles to get it right.

Now if you find a friend who knows his stuff (or a strong recommendation on a good shop) and they will do it at a fair bargain, that's a different story.

(BTW, I didnt assume you don't do "anywork" yourself, I understood that you were shying away from doing this work. And there's no need to.)
