just go with a top end kit...trickflow, holley, edelbrock, fms, etc. proven combo's that work well together.

You might not have to bore it or replace the pistons depending on what condition everything is in. Upping to a 306 or 308 won't be any power increase anyway. If you are going to replace the pistons, go with some higher compression units, maybe 10-10.5:1. Whether stock or aftermarket, have the pistons notched to accept big valves if they're not already. Run some AFR185s, a custom cam and a Systemax intake. Should make lower mid 300s to the wheels with a good tune.

How much horsepower does a 5 horsepower Briggs and Stratton motor have?
You will have at least double that (8 horsepower)

That would be a good idea. But see there is this one problem. You got to tell us what you want out of the engine? HP wise, etc... For instance, will you ever put a blower on it? If so, then DO NOT run 10.5:1 comp! If you stay N/A then thats great! If your future goals will never reach about 500 hp then you can retain the stock block. You can go the cheap way and do a 306 for about 1100 bucks. Thats keeping the stock rods and polishing the crank. You gotta know what your final goal with the engine is before you start messing with it. Its never a good ideal to just buy parts and slap them together without a plan

As one guy mention you can do a H/C/I kit(TFS, FRPP, Holley etc..) A 306 with AFR 165's, GT-40 intake, and camshaft would be a great combo. Also, cheap btw! Now that combo on a 331 would suck. So if you want a 331 you got to make up your mind first before you buy parts, always start from the bottom up!

well its gonna stay n/a. i dont get into the power adders that much. but i wanna make mid-upper 300's if possible with the stock block. so how could i do that?? if its possible with a 306 or 308 then i will go that route but if not then i want more cubes. so thanks for all your help and keep the ideas coming please.

Just slap a Novi 2000 on your completely stock motor and you'll have over 300 rwhp! If your staying N/A then you can keep you stock block. You can actually keep it a 302 as well. You don't need a 306 as it will not offer any hp increase. A 306 is just freshning up the 302 block, thats it. A good heads/cam/intake on your 302 will put you around what your looking for. Good luck

Don't get me wrong, you can go a 347 or a 331. If your internals are just fine then you don't need to touch the block/internals. If you do need to bore it out, you could do a 306 for about 1k at a machine shop. Just reuse your stock connecting rods and polish the crank. Then just bore the block and get new pistons. YOu can get hypertech( I think thats what they are called) pistons instead of forged. Hypertech is cheaper and you won't need forged if you don't plan to have a lot of power anyways. Your looking at around 2k plus if you do a 347 or a 331.

Keep everything stock, run the TFS Top End kit with bigger injectors, MAF, and T-Body and you will hit atleast 300rwhp.
