Swaping stock intake for Cobra, need instructions?

I have a 95 GTS 5 speed with just about every bolt on. KN-intake kit, edlbrok throttle body, , larger MAS sensor, chip, undrive pulleys, fuel regelator and injectors. the heads I have are stock, but the previous owner told me that he had them ported and polished? Anyway, i'm looking for a increase in power and better track times. I was going to go with some new edlebrock heads, only that is alittle out of my range, looking for a price around 700-800. I'm hitting 13.90 at 98.92mph. My intake is stock, by adding a GT-40 intake do you guys think I will get an increase in power or better times?

Hell yes! Stock intakes suck! Sinec your on a budget I would look around for the whole top end off an explorer motor. They come with Gt40/Gt40P heads and flow pretty good for the $$$ you pay for them. Too bad they are still a cast iron head, but good nonetheless. The Explorer upper/lower intake manifold is almost the same as the GT-40 intake and the Cobra intake. They all flow the same numbers approx and the explorer can be had for cheap. Browse the corral.net classifieds and youll be sure to find something. Welcome to Stangnet by the way, alot of good reading is here so hopefully youll stick around. PS. 13.9 is good for a stock headed/intaked motor! What gears/else do you have?

I'm going to look into the Explorer motor, coral.net classifieds, how much does a setup with heads and intake go for? other than what I mention before, I also have 3.73 gears and Ibac 2" lowering with '95 cobra 17x8 wheels with 245/45zr17 tires. I also have mac shorty header with 3" exhaust with HIgh flow cats (CALI smog regulations suck!) x pipe and flowmaster 40 series mufflers.

I payed $350 for the Explorer intake+heads from a junkyard. Put in a request with your state's Auto Recyclers' Association if you have one. Thats what I did once I got smart. I got 3 responses in a day on those parts.

I don't see anything posted for the Explorer parts on corel.net, but i'm going to give my local junkyard a call and see if they have anything. if not, then it looks like either the GT-40 intake or the performer 2 intake. which one do you guys think is better?

I thought the Performer II was for a higher power band? I'd go with the GT-40 setup, they're GREAT intakes (see sig, Cobra on mine) and can be ported for even more power. With my ported Cobra and a 70mm throttle body, I went from 14.8@95mph to a 14.17@99mph. :) I was impressed with it.

I have a couple of questions maybe you guys can answer. I cant find an explorer top end, so I think i'm going with the cobra intake. the stock intake comes out to the left and bends towards the front of the car, only the cobra comes straight out. Do I need some kind of adapter for this upgrade?

Well, with a price range of 7-800, you may be able to get some roller rockers too, if you find a good deal on both items. Also, if you didn't do a CAI when you did your MAF, you may as well do that too.

what is a CAI? I did buy a pro racing 75mm MAF though and a edlbrock 75mm throtlebody to go with this cobra intake

Because the Cobra intake is only machined large enough to accept a 70mm throttle body, I wouldn't purchase the 75mm unit because there is essentially no point to it. If you already have the throttle body and havent bought the intake yet, then I'd look into a trick flow street heat which is setup for a 75mm TB. I just picked up the trick flow unit and its a very nice piece. Power band is idle - 5500, little bit lower then some like it but right where I want it.

Or you could always port the cobra intake to accept the 75mm TB yourself.

the gt40 will do you a world of good.....

here is a perfect real world example:

look at the dyno graph below.....most stock 94-95 gt's make about 165whp stock and about 250lb/ft. (215hp 285lb/ft stock rating at the flywheel). with bbk unequal ceramic shorty headers, bbk off road h-pipe, flowmaster american thunder exhaust, gt40 intake (ported lower), mac cold air kit, and a bbk 70mm throttle body i made 230.2hp and 293.2lb/ft at the wheels. this was done with stock heads, stock cam, stock maf, and stock injectors. the second pull was made with a 75hp zex nitrous kit, but pulls 1 and 3 were n/a with the mods i listed above. my point being that the gt40 will show excellent gains on a motor that only has the most basic mods.

by the way, if you are looking for a true gt40 tubular intake, contact me by PM. i am looking to upgrade mine. good luck with everything and welcome to stangnet.

You need the intake elbow adapter, try looking on summit I think they sell for ~80 new. You may be able to find one in the classifieds for 40-50.

Also, I found this in the How-to sticky: Intake install

I happen to have a polished SVO adapter left over from my explorer top end conversion. I ened up with an extra adapter when I got my TB.
