Not so. Mike is right. That's why we got rid of extremely lean mixtures like cars in the 70s. They produce a large amount of NOx which is a BYPRODUCT of HEAT. Therefore by increasing the a/f ratio from around 17:1 to 14.7:1 has LOWERED NOx emissions and also LOWERED combustion temperatures. The reason WHY it is a higher temperature is because it takes more energy to jump from HC molecual to HC molecual when it is lean because they are farther apart. Also you run hotter at higher altitudes because there is LESS air at high altitudes once again running LEAN.
