I'm wondering if its possible to put just the speaker back in...or is the black box thingy required to hold them...I'm hoping they just mount like traditional speakers...I want to lose the weight of the box and the 2 amps bolted under the speakers but maintain some sterio capability...I rarely us it.

That box holds the speakers. Unless you want to fab some kind of mount then you have to keep it if you want rear speakers. There's 4 bolts across the bottom of the box, and be sure to unplug the wire harnesses first.

Since the amps are there I was also wondering if the speakers are powered or not. Making a plate/adapter would be no problem..in fact I have some smaller Kenwoods I might put in place of them,....but if they are just sent a low signal and require the amp...in other words if they are not powered by the head unit...I'm hosed and they will have to stay...

Those speakers can be mounted easily, but like you guessed, they are low frequency drivers and powered by the amps. No signal to them without the amps. If you were gonna take em out, I would suggest getting a new radio and speakers everywhere. Then you could simply rewire the system.
