anyone have a custom cam and stock computer?

zzskyzz is debating on a cam for his winter 302 build. it is going to consist of a set of ported gt40heads, trickflow intake (eventhough i say an RPM would be better!), 24#ers, 75mm MAF, 125 shot of nitrous....etc etc
he says that the steeda #19 cam is the best for this setup. He is worried about his finicky computer. I say that a custom cam is the ONLY way to go.

any opinions?

ps: he will prolly have a tweecer to go along with it.

With the tweecer it really makes the "work with stock eec" a non-isue.

Custom cam is worth it from a good source.

Some shelf cams are good also the 19 willbe easier to tune as it works quite well with the stock eec.

the 19s would probably be easier to tune with, but when he wacks the juice, going lean shouldnt be an issue. He already has a slightly larger than stock fuel pump, so 24s should be better.

Most people end up running a cobra base tune and 24's would run SUPER easy on that since it was stock for the cobra file.

I have to agree with Greg about tuning makes concern for cam choice an almost non issue.

You asked for opinions so ... here is one or two

Speaking from the experience of a custom cam/Tweecer/ owner

The two can be made to work together quite nicely

If I am understanding your Q correctly

You seem to be saying a custom cam is about helping the pcm not freak

If that is what you are thinking or asking ...

Here is the mind set I used to put together my combo
Use Cam Pro's knowledge to put together a combo that makes power
and
Use the knowledge of a Tuning Pro ... or yourself ... to tune it

If one gives consideration to the pcm when planning for a combo, they are certainly gonna leave power on the table IMHO.

Another thing is the tiny 19lb inj's ...........

They really are too small to work with much of a na combo ......
unless
you jack up the pressure pretty high.

If he has juice plans, they are all the more inadequate from my way of thinking.

Juice is not my thing but ... would 24's even be enough for a h/c/i AND juice combo.

With the Tweecer, I wouldn't worry too much about how it'll run on the stock tune. But to help you out a little with your original question, I knew I wouldn't be able to get a tune for a while so I told Ed C that and my car runs great on the stock tune. No surging/hanging idle, no smoke, and barely any low speed bucking.

heck ... 24 ain't all that great for h/c/i combos at stock pressure

You add fuel in a wet system anyway. 75-100hp are usually dry. 125+ is almost always wet. I would say that the 24's would work fine, as long as you are talking about a 125 wet shot. Dry...no way.

One thing to keep in mind is that a mild grind like the Steeda #19 is no guarantee -- I've got a buddy with that cam, which he purchased specifically to avoid having to play with the EEC, and he still ended up having problems. In the end he ended up with a chip anyway.

And with that in mind...

I say that a custom cam is the ONLY way to go.

I agree 100%. Assume you are going to have to alter the tune anyway, and then go for the stoutest cam that you can stand and that meets your goals.

I have a Steeda 19 and had to get a chip burnt also. Mine would stall constantly when hot.
