anyone ported their own e7s??

i decided to give it a go, i will try and port my own e7s.

I am a total newbie to porting, but have asked around and done some reading on it, and its what i want to do.

Anyone got any tips or stories on their own expierences?? was it hard?how much time did you spend?
i plan to gasket match, smooth the ports and short side radii, remove the air bump and clean it up all around.

DONT POST ABOUT HOW I SHOULD GET GT-40s OR ALUM HEAD, i would like some answers to the questions i asked. thanks!

I wouldnt do it urself unless u really know what ur doing. one messed up and they could be ruined or make u lose hp. Have a professional do it

subscribing, id also like to see some more info here, foxfan post up any other sites youve seen, i know a buddy who has a stock 302 laying around im gonna buy off of him for a 100 bucks, an extra set of e7's, i would love to try and port them myself, and if i mess up, oh well.

edit: holy **** lol after reading some stuff, foxfan you do it and tell me how it is lol.

i did mine....do you have the right tools to do it? if not it will be a long and painful process. i used a dremel and about 15 carbide bits. and it took forever. but if you have a die grinder and an air compressor and carbide burrs than it shouldnt be too hard. good luck and wear eye protection. hot metal shavings in the eye arent good at all

ecu is it more of like a precision job with like numbers and stuff? or can you look at a turorial and be like ok i have to take off this much of this etc.

i know a guy pretty well...he ports heads for a 100 bucks...he knows his ****..been doing it all his life...he told me he beats guys all the time with his ported stock iron heads against others aluminum heads. i am most likely going to have him port mine too.

hmm well i guess i could give it a shot also, my buddy should have a dremel, maybe i can find that die grinder or w/e it is, we'll see, but id like to do this and if i suck atleast do it for fun.

its not hard.. id suggest taking a intake gasket.. fill in what the gasket doesnt cover around the port with a black marker.. slowly come out with it. Ive poked with my old E7's that i exchanged for a set of extremely ported out E7's.. alot of difference in flow.. i have pics if you'd like to see. And.. i bought a set of ported GT40's off a kid.. he had 50 hours in em.. that will give you a idea lol

Faxfan have you started?

Im still trying to descide weather i should port them or just smooth them out and polish them, it dosent seem too hard but i heard from some people its easy to take off too much if you dont have a flowbench

Yeah i started on them, really isnt that hard, i got all the egr bumps down on one head, smoothed the roof where it was, started working on the bowl in the exhaust. isnt hard at all. Just have to be careful and patient, it will take a while.

nice get some pics, what tools are you using? Im having trouble finding an air compressor, i dont want to spend any money, except for porting bits, im trying to borrow one from soneone but right now its looklike im gonna have to buy like a 80 dollar air compressor. Are you going to get some flow numbers when your done?

Are you using the stock valvetrain?

i may take them to a flowbench when i get done. I am not all out porting these things, not going to measure all the little stuff, its more like a good cleanup of the rough spots, smooth sharp turns, there are some rough areas.

I am using a big compressor my dad has, its like 5 feet tall, a 1/4 die grinder, so far all i have used is a small tapered 60 grit stone, looks like an acorn. I am just getting the feel for it mostly now, i will soon get some layout dye and scribe to my gaskets and port match and get some carbide burrs to start really working the guide boss's down.

i will be putting these heads on my new motor, i plan to get some good valve springs that will work well with my b cam, i plan to reuse the stock lifters and pushrods, i also have 1.7 rockers.

it feel like am not doing anything, but after a while i felt the stock exhaust port and the one i have ported, big difference, will definatly flow better. I am just wanting it to flow a bit better to better match my b cam thats in the motor i am building.

overall its fun and a good learning expierence. and i will try and get some pics tomorrow afternoon to show u guys my progress.

thats cool man, i really want to try it, I think im just going to grind out some of the bumps and smooth it out and polish the exhaust and chambers, and ill get the flow numbers on it to see if its alittle better then stock, if it dosent do much ill say screw it and gasket match them, I also know a guy who has a set of 302 heads he says their not aluminum so im thinking gt40 or e7, we'll see how cheap he wants to rid of them for, and i might have 2 sets of heads to grind away
