Dropped my T5 out today to install my King Cobra clutch setup. While lowering the T5, I was hit in the forehead by a small roller bearing. All I can think of is that it came out of the speedometer cable hole. Does anyone have an idea???

does it like a small machined roll pin if it does and its shiny i think that it goes in hole for the reverse light switch did you remove that switch?

It looks just like the small roller bearings that come out of the cup of a universal joint.
That IS a piece that comes out of the reverse light switch, if you removed it. The only other thing it could be is a roller out of your pilot bearing in the back of your crank, because it has small rollers like a u joint roller does. might want to check that if you didn't remove your reverse switch on the side of your tranny.

Okay thanks, those are both 2 good things to check. I never had the reverse switch out, but the wires to it are disconnected. If I remove the switch is that where I should see it? Is there anything else that would come out with it? Also, since replacement of the pilot bearing is on tap, I can check that out too.

That is the roller bearing that fits between the input and mainshaft iside the t-5. SOmetimes it's tricky to assemble those parts so novices tend to drop a few inside the trans.

You can see where it goes in the service manual

There are 15 of these bearings between the two shafts

Oh that can't be good. Sounds like it needs to go into a shop after all.

:(

Yep... It does look like the loose roller bearings in the end of the input shaft.. They ride on the main shaft like said. But... Like Tmoss said.. how the hell did they get out of the trans? lol. Only other thing I can think of is a pilot bearing roller, but that roller is a little too long to be a pilot bearing roller.

Edit: Thought that was a quarter next to the roller.. but it's a dime... It might be from the pilot bearing.

Guess I find out tomorrow when I crawl back under to pull out the bell housing and clutch.

Just pulled my T5 out last week for a rebuild. No parts fell out. I left the bellhousing/clutch on the car. It has the King Cobra clutch and only has 30k miles on it so I left it alone. $624 dollars later and I'll have a rebuilt tranny. New 2nd and 5th gear,,1-2 shift forks and miscellaneous parts. Going to invest in a shifter when I pick it up Friday.

You could be lucky.

Maybe the person who did the rebuild before dropped a couple in. Instead of opening the trans up again to fish them out, maybe he purchased some new ones and used those.

Only way to tell is pull the input shaft and count them.

When you reassembly, use vasaline to hold the rollers in place.

HA - you reminded me of a machinist I worked with in the Navy (mid 70s) that specialized in building racing VW engines. He assembled his cases with vasoline as the assembly lube. I'll never forget that image.
