My car is down until summer, putting another tranny and rear end in it. I am thinking about just ditching all the posi - bull and throwing a spool, some good axles and maybe stepping down to 3.55's. I have heard bad things about spools on the street in the rain, but my car is light duty, weekend warrior... There is probably a 5% chance I will ever get caught in the rain on drag radials... Just seeing if anyone else has chose the relatively cheap route on building a rear end.
p.s -- oh yea, and what is the difference in a regular spool and a mini-spool?

A mini spool replaces the internals of the differential to achieve a full time lock. A full spool replaces the whole differential with what's basically a solid chunk of metal. A full spool is stronger. I have never owned or driven a vehicle with a spool, so I can't say from experience, but I have heard it's not so great for anything but a straight line.

If your in the rear end, and its a weekend car, I would do it in a heartbeat.

I was thinking about installing one but even in the summer we get a lot of rain and i would hate to put that car in the ditch.

ya the extra dollars for an auburn pro or an eaton would seem like nothing compared to ditching your car.

if the trac loc is slipping, i'd rebuild it..it will work fine for drag racing(especially when new), and still work properly on the street, i rebuilt mine a month ago and love it

I have the kit to rebuild mine down stairs. Just waiting for a nice day to take the rear apart. Never rebuilt one before this should be interesting.

it's easy, i had to remove the steel shim behind each spider gear for it to totate back together with the 2 extra friction plates..test fit that pin before installing into the car, i had to grind the flatspots all the way to the top and bottom of the pin, on both sides
