My uncle is a mechanic and rebuilds and does his own machine work, so for his race cars, he usually gets his 460's from the junkyard, preps them and puts them all together. to make a long story short, the place he usually gets his motors from called him and said thay had a few that had just come in and if he wanted them, they would wait till he got there instead of unloading them from the truck. he got there, they put a 460 and a 302 (for a ranger project) on his trailer, and off he went. he spent 3 months cusomizing this ranger and converting it to an EFI 302. He got it running good and everything, and trailered it to the DMV to get it titled and registered and all that mess... well where hes at (Akron, Ohio) they do the E-check, and run all the numbers before they will register it. so they pull the truck in, start inspecting it, then call him into an office with a summit county sherrif in there. The sheriff started asking him questions about the drivetrain and whatnot.. come to find out, the motor was reported stolen in 1995, and they siezed his truck. he had to get reciepts for everything and bring it back up there. the ended up finding out that the junkyard had purchased an entire load of motors that were all stolen. they had never ran the numbers, and he is screwed. he had to completely dissasemble the motor, give them the block, and now he has to find another 302 to put the internals in... just a word to the wise.. always run the numbers through the DMV before you install one.

Some kid Chris that works at the local Auto Zone just got busted for trying to sell a stolen motor out of a 4.6 stang. His dad is a semi serious collector and has a huge garage with his own lift. Well the cops show up about this motor. After they arrested Chris they locked down his old mans garage till they could run all numbers to make sure nothing else was stolen. His old man left sit in jail for a few days. He's back to work but unwilling to talk about what happened.

How are they tracing back these engines to vehicles? Ford has not done the matching vin stuff on engines or trans in a long time, I think they stopped doing that around the early 70s.
