Hey guys im going through powertrains in school right now and pretty soon were going to be doing rear ends... so im thinkin about taking mine in there and putting in a detroit locker with 31 spline moser's. I love the idea on how the detroit locker works, but how is it on the street in turns? How about when its wet out? Any opinions? Pros Cons? Thanks Guys

i had a detroit locker in my old 90, sometimes going around a turn the back of the car would hop around, not a big deal though

I have one in my Tbird. You have to go easy with the gas in turns, and bery easy in the rain. I would not want to go out to the bars driving it. The first week I had it, one of my buddies talked me in to turning it loose leaving his shop. The bad thing is I had to cross 4 lanes to get to the west bound lanes. While I was pulling out and turning, I hit it. That was a BIG mistake. I did a full 180 before I knew it, and decided I would save fave and just keep going east instead.

I would rather have the limited slip. I have heard of people getting into some bad situations when they weren't careful around turns.

If you drive reasonably you wont have that problem. I don't have to worry about rebuild my spool like a limited slip. Both tires will spin every time. It is so cheap. You get the best traction. To me a spool on the street is no different then driving a car with a open rear end, but that just me. I would never go any other route. I've took so many people for a ride that asks me if I hated the spool in my daily driver. I said jump in and you tell me. Everyone of them said wow that's not bad at all, like everyone else makes it out to be.

Both my brother and I use the Detroit Locker No-Spin units with 31 spline axles. I would definitely recommend them for street use. I have used mine for close to a year and a half and 11,000 miles and haven't had an issue with it yet. My brother has had his for close to 9 years without a single problem and close to 70,000 miles.
When cornering, I just take my foot off the gas and coast. In that vein, the rearend is not locked. However, if you gas it while cornering, it WILL want to lock up. After a few drives, it's easy to tell where and when you can "step on it" while cornering and if you ease into the gas it'll be alright.
Really, and I HAVE to say this; People overreact to these locker units. I've heard many people who have never used them promote other products because they've been "educated" by reading material (books, magazines) and not real life situations. That is how a lot of this negative publicity generates toward these units.
I think you'll be fine if you use one in your own car.
