Bolts right up...a 302 is a 5.0 is a 289. (Minor details excluded) You DO need a conversion crossmember, but don't get suckered by the conversion yokes, wiring harnesses or speedo cables. Any wiring is simple and not worth $100, a stock speedo cable will work fine, and if a stock yoke won't fit, LTD and early 80s Lincoln units do the trick. You could even make your own crossmember if you wanted, or modify the stock unit. The hookup to a factory shifter is a brew-your-own deal since WindsorFox is Outta business more or less, and isn't hard. A $60 Lokar cable handles the kickdown; and that's what most vendors sell for $$$.

You need a new flywheel and block/inspection plate too.

if you have a 5 bolt block the AOD will not fit, and there is no adaptor plate to make the conversion. you would have to build your own. if you have the 6 bolt block, then you need the C6 164 tooth flexplate from a 69 up 351w(or even the 351w AOD flexplate), and what 5.0ina66 said.

the reason i mentioned the 5 bolt block is because in 65 for switched over to the 6 bolt block as a running change, so be sure which block you have.

Be careful swapping out the flywheels from the boneyard, there are 28 and 50 ounce balances 'out there'. For your stock 289 you need the 28oz version, so the old balance and the new tooth count is what you need. You may be best served by buying a conversion unit from a supplier.

As I understand it, if you use an AOD front yoke on your existing driveshaft, no cutting is needed.

Here's several links that should help with the details
(incl Windsor Fox, but it might have some info)

http://www.mustangmonthly.com/howto/33598/
http://www.windsor-fox.com/
http://www.shockley.net/Holley-AOD.asp
http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles/987/

Here's some info on making an AOD live with varying
levels of power and abuse

http://www.lincolnsonline.com/article111.html

And here's some generic related info that may
be of help

http://www.lincolnsonline.com/article91.html
http://www.lincolnsonline.com/article48.html
http://www.lincolnsonline.com/article93.html

Now, there is another option that may be more
attractive and, if not done just by throwing
high end expensive parts at it, can be done
for about the same amount, and the end result
can have some parts that are stronger than
even beefed AOD's, and the shifting is more
controllable, esp with complete control over
2nd gear and shift points. I've got one just
about ready to go in place of my beefed AOD

http://www.lincolnsonline.com/article80.html

Here's a very detailed article about a swap of
one of these into a classic Stang

http://www.blueriver.net/~finite/project_od.htm

macxx1@excite.com if I can be of any help

I've got a 70 convert that, if I can't afford a FFR
Cobra when I retire, will get my 351 Lighting efi
& 4R drivetrain, hopefully with the 351 upgraded
a few steps from the present configuration

Good luck!!
