Hey guys,
I had my 1991 AOD rebuilt a few months ago by a guy I trust that had rebuilt it in the past then the computer crapped out on me. Not associated with the AOD, but it took a few weeks of testing all the possible suspects to verify it was the computer and replace it. (The long story is my Pops thought he’d save me some money and take it to another tranny shop and when he got it back it wouldn’t shift out of 1st. They couldn’t figure out why and wouldn’t fix it (they blamed it on my Dad
) so I had to spend more money on taking it and having it rebuilt by my guy.) When I got the car running again I checked the codes from the computer I got:
89 – AXOD lockup solenoid (LUS) circuit failure or clutch converter override CCO circuit failure
Is that the lock up solenoid in the torque converter?
The AOD has trouble catching 1st early in the morning or upon the first start of the day. Mostly only when it’s cold (20-60 degrees). The funny thing is that it is fine when I first put it into gear. It seems to miss after I slow for the first time for the speed bump around the corner (only about 80-100ft away). After I clear the speed bump the engine just revs and I have to wait a few seconds for it to catch (5-15 seconds). It has yet to miss while in gear and going down the road. I’m afraid this will get worse and was wondering if anybody has any insight as to what I should do or what the problems might be. I'm afraid of taking it to a shop because of past experiences and cost. When possible I like to do all my own work, but I'm not real knowledgeable about transmissions. Oh, and I’m not getting this *****box rebuilt again, so if this isn’t an easy/relatively cheap fix (under $200) I’m going with a T5 or Lentech AOD which I would have no idea on how to install.
