AOD DOA...What could it be?

Ok so here's the deal...

I got my car back Sunday. Waited two years for this. Ready to go. So I drove it to the store. No problems, running perfect. Got home, pulled on to the slab and put it in park. I tapped the gas to see if it would idle down...opposite the RPMS shot through the roof I hurried and shut the car off. I think it hit about 4500 rpm.

So I got out, popped the hood and sure as ***** the...wait...I just realized something. I thought that the throttle cable had popped off, but as I was typing this I realized it was the TV cable. *****!

OK anyway, the TV cable popped off the throttle body. So why would that make the throttle body stick? It has it's own spring.

Anyway (again), I let the car cool down and popped the cable back on there and started the car. The car wouldn't move. When I put the car into gear it idles down a little, but that's about it.

Does anyone have any clue why?

i fried an aod when the t/v cable popped off, car moved but wouldnt shift out of 1st....i bought a rebuilt one with the 4r70w gear set an off the classified section on here and didnt no it was reverse valve body an smoked a few clutches in it.....i'm goin to a t5 if i smoke another aod! i dont have a guess why it idle took off an why it wont move...maybe something happened to the t/b to cause the idle issue and the cable to pop off

I had a similar incident and smoked the nice new AOD that I had replaced the original with. needless to say, i took that one out and tore every piece out of it, threw them in the trash and then sold the case on ebay! What a crappy design! Oh well, now its a T-5 and i got to watch the TV cable burn in hell!!!:flame:

Maybe when the cable popped of the throttle body linkage, it did so because the cable broke or came disconnected at the tranny?

Even with the TV cable completely disconnected, the car should still move, but slowly. I had a friend that made a 45 mile drive with the TV cable disconnected, TV Bushing fell apart, but after replacing with a new bushing and reconnecting the cable, all was good.

Sounds like the convertor or trans pump is toast. W/O pressure, you're not moving anywhere.

The plastic bushing broke in half. I think that's why it popped off. Also, I think I know why the throttle stuck open. I think when I tapped the gas the tv cable was already off the tb. So when I tapped the gas the tv cable probably wedged between the valve cover and the throttle plate, not allowing it to return to closed.

wont a full manual valve body eliminate the need for a tv cable?

I have a Lentech manual valve body, but it's not full manual. I can put it into drive and let it shift if I want. I also have an Edge convertor. I just hope neither of those things got hurt!!! $$$

Thats a good question, maybe the cable is broke. Wouldn't that be awesome if thats all it is?!

I'm going to check that out when I get home. Although I'm probably being to optimistic.

Yeah if you burned up the frictions the converter is trashed. You'll never get it all out. The valve body shouldn't be damaged though, it'll just need cleaned when the trans is rebuilt. Usually you can't toast the hard parts too easily. You might need a drum though (where the clutches are). But I think the pump would be salvagable unless it's totally clogged and starved for oil. Or if the filter is clogged. Drop the pan if you can't get it to move. Your worst fears will come true. :nonono:

Well I just got home from school and the tv cable appears to be working properly.

I'll never get what all out?

When I drop the pan am I looking for dirty oil or what?

Why would it just stop shifting moving all together. Other people keep saying their's wouldn't go into second or what ever else, but mine won't move in any gear? Seems like I skip damaged and went straight to broke? No funny noise or anything.

Oh sorry. wasn't specific enough :bang: All that friction material. its like brown sand. You are looking for that in the pan and other parts of the transmission. I don't know why yours would just stop. I'm not sure but I think that one of the clutch packs is for more than one gear, so if it goes out, pfft.

Sorry for being naive, but why would the frictions in the tranny burning up hurt my converter?

That's ok. If the frictions wear rapidly or 'burn up' then little pieces of friction material will be suspended in the trans fluid and go everywhere that it does. It blocks fluid passages, decreases the efficiency of the converter, and interferes with the converter clutch. Note: the converter clutch can also fail this way too. If it slips (wrong fluid maybe) it too will burn up and distribute material throughout the trans. Imagine how bad your brakes would work if the brake fluid was full of brake dust. :jaw: You can flush a converter if you are just replacing old fluid with new, but you cannot get all the friction crap out of the converter unless it is rebuilt by cutting it in half at the seam. Not worth the labor unless it was like a $900 race converter to start with.

Well, I guess the next step is probably to pull the pan. What if the fluid isn't dirty? Will any of that stuff show up on the dipstick?

If the dipstick is not brown, black, stinky, or gritty, then you probably overheated or broke something metal. Metal shavings don't usually stay on the stick like friciton material does.

Sorry for being a PITA, but if something metal broke would I have heard it? I guess I will just have to take the pan off and see, but the soonest I can do that is Sunday and the suspense is killing me.

LOL. If you had like a shaft break or something like that I'm sure you would have heard it. But I meant like gradual failure from overheating. There are two one-way clutches in there. One of them will cause a no drive condition if it slips I think.

Lol, I think of gradual as like over a few hundred miles...not two 5 mile(if that) trips.

And the tranny never "slipped" or anything like that either...DAMN THIS SUX!
