Aod Roller Clutch Upgrade

aight, rebuilding my 87 aod........ intermediate roller clutch fell to pieces........ call ford, they do not sell it anymore. they have an upgraded clutch with a 98 part number, and a drum with an 03 pt number....... old stuff no longer serviced, must upgrade drum and clutch together........

anyone know if this is a mech diode/drum setup?????? was only 108 my cost (30% off) and i see these upgrades for alot more online.......

anyone know?

i have the pt numbers...... and would all my other stock stuff work with this upgraded drum??????????

anyone?
anyone?
bueller???

Yea most good shops do this when they upgrade the AOD. Lentch, Art Carr etc...... But youu can still get the one way clutch, froma trany parts shop. The same thing is used in one of the chevy trannies.(400, 350 or 700r4,, can't remember exact)

thanks for the reply.

now, i have found a bit more out, and also found a freind has a 3k mile 4r from a truck he will sell me for 250....... only thing i need to know, is if the stamped steel FORWARD clutch drum for a 4r will work in the aod.........i know the rest of the stuff will........this is the only other thing holding me back.

and its a turbo 400......that has the same 7 roller OWC.......11 bux.hmmmmmm

I think it should,,since the rest does. Plus you get the 4R intermediate pressure plate so you can run 4 intermediates cltuches instead of 3..

Hopefully crazypete will chime in. He seems to know allot about the AOD's..

Nah, man. Get a core. I used to have a smashed AOD core that I used for parts. The OWC is pretty durable and I consider it to be worthy of re-use. I only swapped between AOD's so far so I cannot comment on chebby trannys but I wrecked my original OWC from the 86 mercury AOD and replaced it with the used (gasp!) 88 gt AOD's OWC and it works great 2 years now.

It's up to you.

Ever seen how the roller one works? It's neat. It's a bunch of rollers on ramps. If the drum turns the wrong way, the rollers ride up the ramp and wedge into the case rim, stopping the assembly from spinning. But once it's spinning the right way, those rollers are just sitting pretty out of harms way. So get a fresh one from a trans shop (trans-star in NH just absolutely MUST have these...heck they had everything else in stock when I just walked in there) or salvage one from a core and dont worry.

Here you are try these folks:
TRANSTAR INDUSTRIES INC
7 RAYMOND AVENUE, SALEM, NH (603) 870-8075

When I went to the local ford dealership looking for a front main pump....they basically told me to get a core and not pay the $175 they would have to charge me. I got the whole transmission for $100 (or was it $125? either way) and ended up with oodles of yummy backup parts and incidentaly rebuilt a transmission with a 7 tooth tailshaft (86 marquis v6) since my 23 tooth speedo gear reads real close with 4.56's! What luck. Happy accident

THANKS FOR THE INPUT GUYS........

woops.

anyway, i founf mo info, after even more research..... and i think im going to go the way silverfox said, and get the core, and use absolutly everything possible..........then, hopefully fully document my struggles, and whatnot for the next poor bass-turd that wants a strog aod, and does not feel like getting ripped off to the tune of 2600 bux for a wide ratio aod!

now, maybe i could find a 93 output shaft....... ive never broke an aod output shaft tho.........hmmmmm.
everyone has to have a goal!
:)
