aod shuffle??

we'll next week im racing my friend in a 90 5 speed 5.0, he has headers, 3.73's, cai, msd, king cobra clutch,x pipe, well me being automatic already puts me at a disadvantage, would doing the aod shuffle help out, or should i just leave it in drive?

Depends how fast you're racing him to. I'd just leave it in D if I were you (seeing how you have a shift kit.) The more you mess with doing the 1D1 shuffle, the more chance you'll make a mistake and hit OD by accident.

SGarlic is right. The shuffle holds the OD band, which is just what you dont want to do.

were gonna race at the track 1/4 mile, so its better to leave it in drive and not overdrive?

I dont know how a fox shifter is, but if you can be in 3rd rather than 4th (OD), do it! This is just MHO.

i don't know if i was told the truth, but i was told by my mechanic to NEVER use OD unless i'm doing interstate driving, he was very set on it.. just go from 1st to D, that's what i'd do. or go intall a lentech valve body, and not worry about OD with the OD lock-out!

edit: i didn't think the shuffle involved OD? isn't it 1, D-1 (to lock in second), and then D? that would get you from 1st to 3rd and be able to hold it in 2nd.

The OD band is used in the shuffle, as I recall. That is one main reason it sucks to do it.

ah, well i'm glad i don't use it then, heh. i just start in 1st and hit it into D. when i first got the car i tried the shuffle and it missed and slammed back into 1st so i said forget it. next month i get my valve body though!

HONESTLY DUDE. ur gonna lose unless uget those 3.73 gears or 4.10's period... unless hes areally ****ty shifter..

yea im gonna get those installed this saturday, and the race is the following saturday, i just dont want to loose cause he talks alot of ****zle

It doesnt matter if you have the shifter in OD or D, the AOD will not shift into overdrive under WOT unless you have a shift kit then it may, which i see you have, just stick it into D to be safe. The only reason to the shuffle is because the stock tranny shifts at 4700-4900rpm, so where does your tranny shift at??? If its close to 5500 your fine to just leave it in D

Sorry I dont bring insight, but I do bring a question. About your AOD, I to have this tranny and I was wondering how does yours perform? Like can you get rubber from the jump? How does it compare to a stick? I dont wanna hijack your thread soyou can PM me. I just got a automatic 88 and I am just trying to get a feel for that tranny's potential.

the automatic is good, it just dosnt give the car full potential as a t5 would, then again all i have a shift kit, i need a stall and trans cooler to get the aod to its full potential, it lightly burns the tires from the launch, hopfully with the 3.90 gears the cars wakes up at the line.

if u know how to drive, and the 3.90 gears are in, and you have tires that do not suck, you should beat him.


of course, you must be honest about if you can drive or not.............. if you cut a 1.2 second light, and nail down a blistering 2.6 60' time, then a hyundai could beat ya

But the problem is, if he thinks he's WOT, but is a tad backed off, he'll hit OD, which is why you don't put the shifter in OD unless you're on the highway, period.

Thats the way I have always done it and been told to do so by many mechanics. They say the shifter should never be in the OD position untill you reach cruising speeds on the highway. I wait till I am turning about 2300 RPM's in third then bump my shifter into OD. I shift it back into D the first full stop I come to after getting off the highway. Doing that and having a big cooler has gotten me to 120K miles with no problem. (knock on wood)
