AOD to T5 Done, Won't go into Gear

Hey guys,

The swap is done, the car starts but won't shift into gear. Only when pulled towards reverse will it staret to engage (grind). I have a billet flywheel, king cobra clutch kit (used alighment tool), steeda double hook/firewall adjuster/cable/tri-ax, and new WC t-5 (red line fluid). I've adjusted for zero slack. I've watched the clutch fork travel with the wife pressing the pedal. Should I adjust even tighter or is something wrong? The t5 slid in except for the last 1/4" and pulled in easy with the bolts. All help is greatly appreciated !

The T5 shifts like it should with the engine off. I'm going to pull the fork cover and attempt to verify the throwout bearing is working correctly. If I have the cable too tight won't it shift easily but not fully engage when the pedal is released?

Loosen the cable a little. There should be some slack in the cable. If you can move it a little with your pinky, that should be good. Looser for lower pedl height and tighter for higher pedal height. That is why I think your cable is adjusted too tight.

Looking in thru the fork cover, the t-out bearing is against the PP fingers without touching the clutch pedal. What will it act like if the cable is too tight? I do have a copy of the 50stangs tech article on clutch adjustment as a reference but it's still kicking my ass.

No slack in cable opeated clutch systems. None! Slack in the cable will allow it to pop off the quadrant. If you had a King Cobra installation guide, you would read and find out that the cable is supposed to be tight & running a preload. The TB is designed to operate with preload and will last longer & run quieter with preload.

Put slack in the cable operated system and you end up with exactly the symptoms you describe - can't get into gear, or grinds when you try to shift.

Put the car up on jackstands on all 4 corners. Put the car in 1s't gear & start the engine. Look & see if the rear wheels turn with the clutch pedal pressed all the way to the floor. That means that the cable is not tight enough to disengage the clutch. Tighten up the cable at the clutch fork until you have 1" or so of travel before it starts to disengage. Use the firewall adjuster to fine tune the engagement point to suit your driving style.

When you are done & the clutch is properly adjusted, the rear wheels will not turn with the car in any gear and the clutch pedal is fully pressed to the floor.

Thanks JR, I bought the King Cobra kit from D & D with no instructions. I have it working now, had to tighten the adjustable nuts on the steeda cable all the way tight. I put about 15 miles on it but need to get the adjustable cross-memner welded tomorrow, Then I'll tweek the firewall adjuster.

Thanks to all!
