Drivetrain Aod to T5 shifter Question

I am in the process of an Aod to t5 swap on a 1990 notch. Is there any difference in the steering column between the two columns? Is there any wiring differences? When I got the car the Aod shifter was already removed so, I did not get to see the original wiring for myself.
Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The differences are the transmission harness under the car, the o2 sensor harness, and the computer. Without modification the reverse lights won't work. If a 5 speed computer is used the jumper in the o2 harness should be swapped around. You don't have to source new harnesses but will need a t5 reverse switch pig tail for the side of the trans. O2 sensor harness can have the wires swapped around but don't do it unless changing the computer. Computer isn't necessary but makes it a little easier to drive.

Transmission hump is also different.

you can certainly make it work without the hump.

Unless you want it to look factory under the console and carpet I never saw the point of doing hump...

I swapped my first one back in highschool with out the hump, and my current one is swapped with out the hump....zero issues with either

That’s really the only reason. I originally did it without the hump.

I did it when I went through my interior a couple years ago just to get a better fit with the lower shifter seal. Other that that not necessary really.

Hey Everyone,
Its been a while since I was on here and working on the notch. I'm still planning the auto to T5 swap but, I have another question. The car current has the AOD computer and wiring harness. I have installed the pedal assembly and put the column back in. The T5 I have is of unknown condition. So, I was thinking of putting a flywheel in the car with a bellhousing and starter and see if this car even runs. So, what wiring changes, if any , do I need to make just to get it to start? Since is was an AOD, how do you "trick" the computer into thinking the car is in park to get it to start? Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated.

On the AOD, the neutral safety switch is part of the connector with the reverse light switch under the car in the tunnel. When I did my AOD to T5 swap in my '90, I just jumpered the neutral safety switch at that connector. I had a trans from a '97 V6 which didn't have the switch in the trans cover. I have had no issue with doing this.

As far as wiring changes, I did nothing wiring wise. I even left the clutch interlock switch jumpered - AOD cars have the switch from the factory but there is a jumper wire to prevent its use. Is it ideal, not necessarily, but I'm the only one that drives my car and I know these things are in place.

Thanks for the reply. I’ll have to get back under the car and see if I can find the neutral safety switch. Which wires need to be jumpered?

You can see that in the manual trans configuration that wires 32 and 33 get jumpered.

Hi Kruiser,
Thanks again for the information!!! I will try to get back under the car this weekend and see what I can find. When I bought the car about a year ago, the previous owner had already removed the AOD and shifter. So, I never saw what it was supposed to look like. I was told the car ran but, without a flexplate/flywheel, there was no way to test start it. What I thought was going to be a quick and easy swapped, has turned into a mess. Life happens and I just haven't been as motivated to work on it.
