Are my rear brakes ok? Pics inside.

Hey,

I noticed while looking at my rear driver side brake, this peice of metal shown in the first pic below, is kinda hanging, between the caliper and brake pad.

Should it be like that?

The second pic is my passenger side brake, and it doesnt even have the peice of metal attached?

Do I need to fix/change anything?

First pic looks like it could be maybe a old backing plate? as long as your not getting any hairy noises and the car is stopping ok, then i think you should be fine. Like earlier stated, it looks like the pad is still against the rotor.

I had the same problem but on a front rotor. Everything was fine until the backing plate kept slipping down till it started to cut a groove in the rotor at the hub. if the pads are old might as well replace but if not I would just keep an eye on it.

yea its just there to keep rattling, chattering and squeaking from the rear pads to a minimum, but you can get away with just removing it. Just take a screw driver and pry that part out.

Yea I agree with GTA_V6_Mustang...it looks like an anti rattle shim/plate. I would just pull it off. Pry it out or take the caliper off if you have too. Its not that hard. But yea if it isnt bothering you and its not grinding against the rotor or anything you can just leave it that way if you want.

just a shim plate....I would take it out, clean back side of the pads and spray them with some stop squeel

I would take it out, because if it does decide to fall off by itself it may cause more damage than you want.
