So I'm new here and just had problems with my 65 fasatback that I explaned in another post. One other problem I have is that the automatic transmission shifter is not right. Park is park, but if you pull the shifter all the way to the rear and into low, the indicator is in between neutral and drive. The 302 is a 1968 and the C4 is a 1966. Mechanic says it may have the wrong length linkage inside the transmission? Any ideas? Thanks.

Sounds a little strange to me. These things were standardized across Ford for many years. MY guess would be somebody converted a column-shift trans to floor shift for the Mustang, but got the arm length wrong. You can get the Mustang arm new. I'm not sure how the "indicator" could be wrong, though, It's bolted to the shift lever on the trans. If the lever is in "P" or "L", the indicator will be there, too.
The 1964-66 shift pattern will be "wrong" for a 68, though. The 64-66 shift pattern was

The "O" is normal drive. The "•" eliminates 1st gear for driving in rain or snow, to reduce wheelspin. It also significantly reduces performance, of course.

Hey I messed up and gave you info about the transmission in my son's 69 coupe. My 65 fastback has the following transmission codes; D7OP-BA PEEV8. My research show either a 1977 Torino or LTD II. My problem is still that when moving the floor shifter from park to drive and the transmission actually goes from park to reverse to neutral to drive to second to first. The shifter locks into each selection, but the indicator is way off. If the "arm length" is wrong, what part number and length am I looking for?

I had the same problem with my 65 Mustang, so I fabricated a short extension and bolted it to my floor shift lever. This extended the throw so that everything lined up. Might not be the "correct" way, but it got me on the road. That was 10 years ago. I may get around to fixing it the "right" way in the next 10 or 15 years, but for now it is working great.
