Autometer water gauge?

what is the first temp reading on the gauge? on mine it is 130, so until the motor is a little warmed up, it does not read.
if it is electrical, you can test it by grounding the sender wire and/or using resistors if you know the gauge calibration (real pain).
if it is mechanical, it has a capillary tube - not much you can do.

If it is mechanical you can put the end of the copper tubing/wire into a pot of boiling water. Check the gauge when the water begins to boil. I can't remember what temp that is.

I too questioned my AM mech. water temp gauge and their product technical support told me about the boiling water trick. It would be easy to do with the gauge out of the car-obviously.
Hoofn, you are right! - that escaped me when i replied the first time. you dont need to go so hot as boiling, though it is no big deal (folks heat up t-stats all the time to check them). get a turkey thermometer and use it in the same pot. you will get a decent idea of whether it is accurate or not.
and with the second thermometer idea, theoretically you could carefully bring a hot pot of water out to the car. have the probe loosened and pop it in. you would get a flash reading and be able to watch it change as temps go down. that would probably work alright and not require you to R/R the whole gauge/sender for testing.
NOTE: i would probably not use the turkey thermometer again for human consumption - if there is ethyl glycol residue, etc on the probe of your AM gauge, it could contaminate the thermometer in future use.

Assuming NORMAL atmospheric pressure....Up in the mountains, with less pressure, the boiling point is lower, making it hard to heat up food with boiling waterStriped5.0 said:

I've never had to return anything to Summit but they are a stand-up company and should stand by their sale. I'm sure they wouldn't have any trouble just exchanging the gauge but you'll have to give them a call.

If you touch the wrong studs on the back or touch the wrong wires in the install it will ruin the gauge itself.
