How much do you need the axle dampner on the rear suspension? I have 275/45/17 nittos on a 17x11 thorq thrusters on the rears, they use to rub the axle dampners. When I got the car lowered I asked for the axle dampners to be removed. A guy at Ford said that the axle dampners don't do anything. It's suppose to prevent your axle from turning. I've had situations where I'm doing like 90 mph on the highway and I approach some bridge where there's little lip where the concrete meets the asphalt. The rear end just jumps up, it's almost to the point of losing control of the car. I have kyb adjustable shocks all around.
 
It's NOT the dog bone, they are the horizontal shocks in the rear end, and I wouldn't ditch them until you get some quality aftermarket lower control arms. They keep your rear axle from twisting.
 
"Twisting" really isn't the right term. Those dampeners are the quad shocks and are there to control wheel hop. Wheel hop occurs as the rear tires repeatedly lose and regain traction. It's caused by flex in the control arms.

In may situations, you can ditch them all together, but it's always best to wait until you've installed quality aftermarket LCAs first.

I'm of the the philosophy that unless there's a reason for it, get rid of it (the K.I.S.S. rule). But you're right. The factory design included the quads but that doesn't mean that you need to keep them, especially considering Ford's design methodology:
"Sir, we have a problem with wheelhop in about 10% of the cars. Should we fix the problem?"
"No, just slap something on there to hide it and call it a day."

In my opinion, I think they have an appreciable effect on only a few of the Mustangs out there.

Mine have long since been removed, but that was only because I was installing LCAs and coilovers at the time. YRMV
