To make a long story short, I have rearend fluid leaking out the passenger side axle seal. The bearings and seals are brand new. I've verified that the cause of the leakage is the excessive amount of up-and down or side-to-side axle shaft end play, obviously from the high mileage and bearings going south. I've since replaced my worn stock 28 spline axle with a buddies that looked to be in better shape than mine and unfortunately the same outcome occured. MY QUESTION IS THIS:
WHAT IS THE DIAMETER OF THE BEARING SURFACE ON A STOCK 28 SPLINE 8.8 AXLE? i DON'T CURRENTLY HAVE THE $$$ TO REPLACE BOTH WITH MOSER'S OR ANYTHING OF THAT NATURE. So since I'm only wanting to replace the leaking one for now I'd like to be able to have some sort measurement to go off so I don't get another dud of an axle. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.:SNSign:

sounds like c-clip issues that is causing the seal to wear out.

fix it you don't want your wheel falling off

There should be lots of axles bearing surface area that will have no wear on it as it is quite wide in comparison to the bearing width. By inspecting the axle where the bearing and seal ride, you will be able to see if there is scarring or excessive wear on it. If you don't see any, I would tend to think that the seal was maybe installed poorly (not pushed in square or maybe pounded in excessively and no longer square to the axle).
Maybe the other post could elaborate on a c-clip problem, I can't figure how it would be an issue, either your c-clip is in place or it isn't, if it isn't, you have bigger problems.
Seals are cheap, so is the bearing for that matter, if it were me, I would pull the axle again, inspect it, measure the axle bearing race using a caliper to make sure it is consistant and even, if no abnormal or excessive obvious wear, then install the new bearing and seal.

Not the c-clips.

Thanks for the ideas but I know for a fact that I have my problem narrowed down to a worn bearing race, I just wanted to know the measurement of a stock 28 spline axle bearing race. Thanks again.

i dont know the measurement you are looking for but i know that advance sells repair bearings that move the bearing in slightly on the axle so that it contacts a different part of the axle. i dont know if thats something you are willing to do, but its just an option

there is rubber o-ring in the end of your axle shaft that helps keep the c-clip in place when those disinitgrate it gives alot more play in the system, and can let the c-clip walk out. check your axleshaft endplay with a dial indacator it should be between .030 and .005

if fact everyone that has a c-cliped reared should check their endplay for safty I can't even remeber how many cars I have seen lose a wheel.

One fix for this is a replacement bearing setup to fix worn axles.

It is a deal that relocates the bearing inward slightly to a less worn section of the axle.

I got one for my 89 LX 2.3. The Carquest part number for a 7.5 in axle is B=RP5707. I would think this fits and 8.8, but I would ask.
