The ol' Fox is getting new front and rear main seals, long tube headers, h-pipe, catback exhaust, tranny overhaul, shift kit, stall convertor and Ford Racing 3:73 gears. That thing is gonna be alive when it comes back from the shop considering the previous setup was a bone stock 90 GT AOD with 2:73's.

3.73's are still a fine choice, but 4.10 are the best for an auto setup (mind you your gas mileage suffers :nice: ) But you will still be pleased with them over the 2.73's no doubt.

yes that's exactly what I'm telling you.

I have 3.73's in my 5 speed stang, and I like them because I don't do much highway travel anymore, but truthefully, they're too much. People have a tendency to put WAY too much gear in their cars. WHY?? because gears have such a drastic difference in quarter mile times and seat of the pants feel. Gears are NOT a replacement for real power adders such as heads/cam/intake and forced induction.

Truthefully, I miss the days of being able to go 80-85 mph and only be spinning 2k rpms, drop it into 4th, and slam the accelerator.

now I'm spinning 2500 rpms+ just to go freaking 70 or so. the car is a complete blast on the street, but driving on the freeway is now a chore. the 5.0 engine's sweet spot for cruising is 2000 rpms, and gears shove that way up closer to 3k on the freeway.

people imo are better off being slightly more conservative on the gear, and investing more into the actual engine so that they can enjoy their car more on the freeway.

The only reason I bring this up is because gears are a big $ investment. I really used to enjoy the freeway, and now my mustang is limited to speeds of 70 mph or so unless I want to tax the hell out of the engine.

an aod with 4.10s is about the same as a 5 speed with 3.73's (from what I understand)

2400 rpms isn't bad, but I bet that is speeds slower than 75. 2400 rpm still makes the car feel "uncomfortable" as the sweet spot is right at 2100 rpms (the drone)

it's not really as big a deal as I'm making it sound, and truthefully we should never be driving faster than 75 anyhow right???

just don't expect to be able to drop it into 4th when your doing 75-80 and a honda try's to prove himself to you. On a flip note, it's probably not super safe to kick it out of od at 80 with 4.10's

I agree with v8only and Ive had that mentality all along. Now that I have my blower I have no need for 3.73's on my T5. My car hauls off the line, from a roll, top end (simply drop into 4th), whatever you want. Crusing is way chill too. Judging by the guys name, Blown Fox, I'd say the 3.73s on his auto will be just fine. :)

don't mind me either, I love debating and pushing peoples buttons :)

the only reason I brought this up actually because I am low budget (spend money on family) and have a bone stock long block with 186k miles.

after I put in my 3.73 gears, I have enough torque to drag california off the map, and now I REALLY realize how seriously my horespower is lacking, as it just quits making power up top in comparison to how fast the gears get the car going. I've also been fusterated a couple of times on the freeway when people hit me up, and I can no longer downshift to play.

I think you're approaching this wrong with your thinking. Gears should be matched to what the car is for. So if yours is for just cruising around, then maybe those are too much for you. If it's for a 1/4 mile car, then there's no need to consider what the engine will be running at while crusing on the highway at 75. Obviously if it's somewhere in the middle, you have to decide. So just because someone has more gear than you, doesn't mean they're "wrong" or their car setup doesn't work as well.

you're absolutely correct, and truthefully I'm gonna keep my gears unless I go blown someday.

the only thing I'm combatting is the typical "get 4.10's or get 3.73's" mentality. I see a million "what gear" questions and 9 out of 10 people will suggest the steepest possible gear, followed by a "I don't mind 2600 rpm on the freeway" without ever stopping to ask what the intended setup is.

in the original posters post, it appears he is blown, for that reason he shouldn't really go beyond the 3.73's, yet the first thing everyone said is how crazy he was for not doing the 4.10's

I agree with not generalizing answers -- and for that reason, the first response should have been a question asking "What the heck are you planning on doing with this car and what kind of setup do you have now???" -- instead of just opinions.

Even a blower car can run some serious gears if the setup is right and needs them -- it all falls back on that.
