Hello all , well my car is acting weird again. When I am driving down the road I am getting a whirring sound from the rear end of my car, the noise is still their even if I shift it into nuetral and coast. The drivers side axle bearing went bad on me a few months ago and I replaced both bearing and seals, when I reassembled it I just coated the bearings with gear oil, should I have packed them in wheel bearing grease?. Any ideas would be apreciated, I will be working on the car friday.

1. Lubricate new bearing with lubricant E0AZ-19580-A or equivalent, and install bearing into housing bore using wheel bearing installing tool T78P-1225-A, or equivalent.
2. Install axle shaft seal using wheel seal installer T78P-1177-A, or equivalent. Apply lubricant C1AZ-19590-B or equivalent, between seal lips. CAUTION : Installing bearing or seal assembly without proper tool may result in an early bearing or seal failure. If seal becomes cocked in bore during installation, remove it and install new one.
3. Check for presence of axle shaft O-ring on shaft spline end and install if not present.

how did the axle look where the bearing rides did it show any signs of wear if so the axle should have been replaced or a special bearing used called an axle repair package bearing. the axle repair bearing allows bearing & seal to ride on un-worn axle path....also did you drain the fluid if so did you add friction modifier and did you fill the axle with fluid properly...
Ahhhh...they are sealed bearings...Ratech part from Summit.
The new ones I got from Ford racing with my gears were not sealed. The axle rode on pins that were in the outer race. there was no inner race.

Thanks for the replies folks, I used all of the required tools on reassembly and everything looked/lined up perfectly, I used the 4 oz. bottle of friction modifier along with the gear oil when I refiled it. I've got a quick question, could a carrier bearing make a whirring sound while coasting in neutral? Thanks in advance.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the axleshafts had no imperfections in them when I changed the axle bearings out.

Yes it can. My car keeps eating the driver's side carrier bearing for some reason. I have had it replaced twice. It is the only install I haven't done myself and also the only one I have had problems with
I dont know what to try next. The first time the bearing lasted about 2000 miles before it became extremely loud. When removed it looked like hammer and chisel were used on the rollers. About 3000 miles later and the problem is back. Im going to have a race shop here in Tampa look at it sometime to see if the housing is bent or something.Whats the odds a new bearing is bad??? Normally an axle bearing will sound off when you turn the wheel...then its quiet when straight...short of trying that and checking for play in the wheels.

I am kind of thinking carrier bearing now, I will know for sure when I tear it down friday. The reason I changed out the axle bearings was the passenger side developed a very annoying squeek and I figured I would change them both out while the rear end was apart, now a few months later I am getting a whirring/growling sound from the rear that is still present while coasting in neutral, driving straight or turning

I had a problem similar to this, and it turned out my right rear brake caliber had locked up and was "dragging" on the rotor. Might want to check that before you tear the rear end apart again.

Had the same problem and it ended up being the rear brake also. The caliper got hung up on one of the sliders. It was forcing the caliper to wear the pads at an angle.
I would def check out the rear brakes before a complete tear-down.

Thanks again for the great feedback guys, yeah I was hoping that was the problem so I jacked up the rear of the car and ran it in gear, both wheels were spinning freely and their as no apparent sounds that didn't belong

When I jacked mine up there was no sounds either. I found the problem after it wore down one pad completely and it started to grind against the rotor. You should be able to unbolt the caliper and try to move the sliders by hand. They should move freely.
