bad rear end noise

i have an 88 mustang lx 5.0, i noticed last night coming home on right-hand turns the rear end emits a high-pitch squeal. i think its that the rear-end might have run out of fluid, it sometimes leave some spots in the driveway. that or traction-lock going bad? any suggestions? thanks

check fluid level if its low and if you have a leak that leaves visual signs on driveway and have rear end whining,high-pitch squeal(not good at all). for how long? sounds like traction lok clutch noise.you might want to seek professional help.if you drive it you may end up blowing out rear end. you can't just refill with oil it takes sae 80or90 hypoid gear lubricant and 4oz. of friction modifier.you could remove rear cover(see where its leaking from probably gasket) inspect and add lubricant and friction modifier and replace gasket and see if that cures it but like you said (bad rear end noise) highly unlikely, but it would be your decision to make.if you have no experience with rear ends i would leave it to the pros.

mine does the same thing. Really loud when I make sharp turns off while coasting.

I know the diff is pretty much shot... But other than that it runs good.

Been drivin it this way for almost 4,000 miles.

you need to get it checked you could loose an axle(wheel) going around one of those curves one day.

The Stock differential shouldn't make any noise at all. Out of all of the Mustang's that I have owned (my current one being the only one without a stock diff) NONE of them had made any noise at all. The clutch type LSD should be silent.

Check the fluid. It's not hard.

1) Chock the front wheels
2) Jack up the rear end
3) Use a 3/8" ratchet & 1/2" long extension (no socket)
4) Find the plug on the front left (drivers side) of the pumpkin
5) Remove the plug and stick your finger in there. The full level for the diff is the bottom of this plug, so you should beable to feel fluid. Some might even spill out if it's full from the rear end being tilted.

If you can't feel any fluid... Add some (75w-90 or others). It might not hurt to add some 'Friction modifier' also if it's really low. You'll have to use a tube or pump to get fluid in there.

me and my dad got the rear up in the air and checked it, its definitelly low on fluid! thanks for everyone's suggestions.

Did that fix it? I don't see it making any noise because it's a little low on fluid. it might be making noise if it was almost empty or the Tlock it on it's last leg.

Are you sure it's the rear and not a wheel bearing or brakes?

mine has fluid in it and it makes the noise doing left and right turns.


Should I just buy a diff that wont wear out like the Clutch type diffs?

we used a coathanger to test for fluid lower down, didnt get any. we're taking it to a local shop to get it looked at

You probably either fried the crap out of your clutch packs, started to mangle a spider gear bushing or other bearings went dry.
