Bad voltage regulator?

lastnight driving around i got on it a bit and the instant it went above 3k RPM's the voltage jumped up to 16 so i immedeatly got off it and the voltage dropped back down to normal. i poped the hood and didnt smell/see anything burnt so i drove home and it was fine (but i also stayed under 3k). i wanted to test it again so i took it to WOT and up to about 4K... same thing happend as it passed 3-3.5K...


anyone expierenced this? the alternator is 2 years old with a lifetime warranty from pepboys... should i go see if it will happen again and then go exchange it?

ok took the car out for a quick drive and its doing the same thing... as soon as i hit 3000 RPM's the voltage spikes to 18 and once i let off the gas it drops to normal

I had the same thing happen to my 87 gt auto, it was a bad regulator, it was a new one from a parts store, so I just got a different one.

i just went and exchanged alts, gonna go install the new one now. hopefully that was it

yep, that was the problem. installed the new alt and all is good
