im doing a head/cam swap and was wondering if i needed to mark anything when taking out the balancer? i pushed down the metal "marker" and scribed in a mark with a screw driver. was this even needed? or does it only go on in one position?

The balancer only can go on the crank one way. There is a keyway that lines it up for you. If you would like to highlight some timing marks now while it is off with some bright paint so it will make it easier to read when you set the timing then do it now.

You didn't have to scribe it though.

Great idea by sleeper - I "detail" my balancers before installing. Clean, light sanding perimeter; spray bomb black satin. Let it dry, then using a toothpick, take silver enamel (Testors model paint works fine) and highlight the imprinted timing marks/lines/numbers. If you're not interested in doing the whole thing, simply highlight tdc, 10 degrees btdc, and the point you'd like to set it at - say 16 degrees btdc.

those silver indelible markers work well too (on a black balancer) and are easy and quick (we can aspire to be as meticulous as Michael, but not all of us are).
