I have a new pioneer balancer and I want to install it. My old one has a wobble and I want to time my engine (I can't read the marks on my old balancer).

Some peeps say to remove the fan and water pulley, others say not to bother.....should I go to it from the top, or jack the car and work on the balancer from the bottom.

I plan to borrow the puller today from Autozone.

Thx

If you're just changing the balancer out you're gonna need to remove the overflow tank, fan, and belt. Then I find it easier to take the crank pulley off while the balancer is still on the car. Then put the trans in 5th and break the nut loose holding the balancer on and use the remover.

As long as you don't move the distributor, the new balancer will go on in the same position as the old one due to the keyway, and the timing will be the same.

Thanks, I am not worried about the timing, cause it is easy to put a light to it.

Do I get to the balancer from the top, or the bottom, or is it a combo of the two?

Also, the fan has a few bolts and a plug, is it the same for the overflow bottle? (I have not really looked at the bottle or the fan)

Timing wont change because of the key and keyway that Dave mentioned. Not a worry even if the motor turns over.

Good luck.

Thanks, the timing is not an issue with me...I know there is a key.....my questions are about removing the bottle and the fan....also, do you get to the crank/balancer from the top, or jack the car and get to it from the bottom...that is my boggle right now...thanks in advance.:SNSign:

Overflow bottle or fan shouldn't give you any problems.

As for from the top or bottom, I broke the bolt loose from the top, but then after that removed it from the underneath(that way if it fell it fell on me). And then for the install I started on the bottom and then once I got it going finished up top.

Good Luck

Thanks for the specifics.....I'll follow up with how easy/difficult the job is.:nice:

The only thing I removed was the belt...
Make sure you remove the washer out of the balancer when you remove the bolt!!!! Or else removing it will be a bitch.

To break the bolt loose use a wrench with like pipe and lodge it against the ground and crank the car for a second.

Well I use a impact wrench to get my HB bolt out. I removed the Fan,overflow bottle and pulley first. I did mine from the top. Easy in my book.

Mark

I took the bottle off and used a breaker bar, but I could not get the HB bolt to budge, my parking brake does not work and a brick behind the tires did not seem to work either, it was too spongy when trying to turn the bolt. I considered the breaker bar on the cement and turn the crank, but with my luck I would break something else (starter or something). Since I plan to put a new water pump in as well, I am going to wait til I have the pump, then take out the fan and use my impact on the water pump and the balancer at the same time. I measured it last night and it looked like my impact will fit with the fan removed.

Thanks
